George's grandfather was James Rayment Snr (1817-1890). He was born in Essex, England. He arrived in Melbourne aboard the “Bengal” in 1840. He married Jane McKnight on 12 March 1861. She died in 1871. James lived in South Melbourne until he married Elizabeth Brown in 1873. He moved to “Spenceycroft” at 654 Canterbury Road in 1880 - the property had a dairy. He moved to 85 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills (the house still stands) in 1886 but still ran the dairy. He moved back to South Melbourne and died there in 1890. His son James Rayment Jnr (1862-1916) was born in Emerald Hill. He married Harriet Ratten in 1882 and lived at 85-87 Croydon Rd Surrey Hills until 1914. He also owned properties at 70,72,81 and 83 Croydon Road. Harriet died in 1897. He married Victoria Benbow in 1898. In 1912 his occupation was fishmonger. In 1914 he moved to “The Wattles” at 95 Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. In 1919 his wife Victoria owned lots 45,47,49,51,53,55 Durham Road. Surrey Hills. He died 1916 and Victoria died in 1939. James, the third, lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills where he and his wife had a flower and vegetable farm. His brother was George Leslie Rayment (1894-1976), known as Les, the subject of this photo. He was born in Boroondarra. He lived at 85 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills. In 1914 he enlisted and served in the HQ staff 3rd Light Horse Brigade and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. In 1916 he was discharged for family reasons, those being that his father had died and there was no-one at home to support the family in Middlesex Road. In 1918 he married Grace Lewis at the Highfield Methodist Church. In 1919 they moved into “Clovelly”, 94 Durham Road, Surrey Hills. In 1927 his wife Grace died and in 1933 he married Celia Lewis. In 1936, with the help of his brother James, they built their new house at 14 Benwerrin Road, Surrey Hills. Celia died in 1967 and Les in 1976. Les had 2 children Dr Dulcie Grace Rayment and Norma Lesley Rayment. (Information courtesy of Mel Constable; Mel's wife is a Rayment descendant). Les' brother, James Arthur Rayment, was born in Balwyn in 1889. His A.I.F. record states - he joined on the 14 July 1915 to the 5th Field Company Engineers. His father was living in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills at the time of his enlistment. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 22/7/1919. His occupation was carpenter; his religion, Methodist. He was 26 years and 2 months at enlistment and left Australia on 23/11/1915. James Arthur Rayment married Lilian Sarah Smith in 1920 (Ref: Victoria 1920/6780). REF: Mrs Dorothy Legg - James Rayment and his wife Elizabeth lived and farmed in Russell Street in the 1860s. The land was a dairy property and may have included some of the land later owned by the Presbyterian Church. Their sons James and Alex walked to the Balwyn State School. Stanley Lawrence Dawson had the grocery at 148 Union Road during the 1940s. The premises had previously been occupied by J T Poynton (butcher). It passed to A J Griffiths, also a grocer, c 1950 and then became a dry cleaners c1970. Stan was born in Werribee in c1890; died Balwyn in 1956. He married Gladys Elizabeth Goodfellow in 1922. They lived at 272 Mont Albert Road, SUrrey Hills and later at 7 Clapham Road, Balwyn.A black and white photograph of a couple. The Jackson family were manufacturing jewellers who lived at 7 Russell Street and had their business factory next door at 9 Russell Street. George James Jackson born 1868 in Handsworth, Staffordshire married Alice Eleanor Taylor, born 1868, in 1890. The house in Russell STreet was named 'Handsworth'. They had a large family - this list may not be complete: William George (1894-1895), George Hall (1896-1984), Gertrude Annie (1898-1989), Edward James (1900-1937), Allan Alfred (1902-1969), Joseph (1904-1954), Henry Hadley (1905-1958), Eleanor Isobel (1911-1984), Sylvia May (1914-2008) and Alice Louise (dates not known). George died in 1950; Alice died in 1924. Alice Louisa (Louise) Jackson was one of 12 children of George James Jackson and his wife Alice Eleanor (nee Taylor); both of whom were jewellers. One of her brothers, George Hall Jackson, served in WW1. The family lived at 'Handsworth', 7 Russell Street, Surrey Hills. Alice was born 25/9/1892 and died 25/8/1983. She was buried in Box Hill Cemetery - CE-*-2010. REF: Personal communication (email) Ruth Theodoridis, her niece, 30/5/2018: Alice trained at the Austin Hospital prior to WW2. She worked there after graduating and became the charge sister of the ward for terminally ill patients, many of whom were TB patients. After she retired from the Austin she nursed elderly and dying people in the Surrey Hills area. She had had a tricycle made especially for her as she could not ride a bicycle. She would always ride in the centre of the road in case the trike tipped over. She left her estate to the hospital. Born in 1900, Mona was the daughter of Florence Jane McDowall Stuart (1867-1936) and George Hudson Grant (1864-1910) who married in 1899. He was a surveyor and they lived in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills. Her full name was Jessie Mona Stuart Grant and she had a sister Mollie. In 1924 she married Clarence William Willoughby Webster (1895-1980) - SERN 33286. Clarence was born in Thorpedale where his father was a teacher. He was living in View Street Mont Albert and was a law student when he enlisted on 3 October 1916. After discharge on 10 May 1919, Clarence returned to his studies. He joined a legal firm in the city which became Pearce & Webster (later Pearce Webster Dugdale). Mona and Clarence lived in Surrey Hills and Mont Albert in a number of homes for the remainder of their lives. Joan Mary Bray was born 6/9/1915 in Brisbane, the daughter of Herbert Edward Bray and his wife Grace (nee Shepherd) who married in Wisbech, Cambridge in 1892. The family lived at 5 Barton Street from the late 1920s. She completed her primary schooling at Auburn Primary by travelling there by the little black bus along Canterbury Road. She then went on to Mont Albert Central School and Melbourne Girls High. Locally she belonged to the 1st Surrey Hills Girl Guide Company at Holy Trinity Church. She trained as a nurse at Epworth Hospital and in 1941 served with the army at Gaza Hospital in the Middle East, then in New Guinea. From 1944 until the end of the war she was in Bougainville. Her mother died in Surrey Hills 29/9/1945 and her father moved to Hawthorn; he died in 1955. She had 3 older sisters: Eveline Grace (1893-1978) m Eric Benson; Violet Constance (1894-1983 - ? Sister Constance in mother’s death notice); Dorothy Maud (1896 - ? Sister Ursula in mother’s death notice). After the war she was a RSSL nurse, Matron of St Gabriel’s Baby Home in Balwyn, then Director of Nursing at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital, East Melbourne. She resigned to be married. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crecent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). The pencil sketch from which this photo was taken had been hidden from view from 1919 - 1996 when it was located behind a framed photo retrieved from the Surrey Hills Bowling Club at the time of its closure. The sketch had been used as backing when photo framed in 1919. Jocelyn Hall gave the original to great nephew, [name TBC], who was a pharmacist at the Mont Albert tram terminus at the time. Initially the subject's identity was not known. A scribbled name 'Walduck' on a different photo finally resulted in the identification as John Robert Gray, who died 1917. He was engaged at the time of enlistment and after his death his fiancee did not marry. He attended Surrey Hills Primary School and was a salesman at the time of enlistment on 9 May 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 3 October 1916. His AIF papers list his mother as his next of kin, both resident in Suffolk Road, Surrey Hills. He was a gunner in the Howitzer Brigade 120. He was Killed in Action on 21 June 1917 and was buried at Bapaume Australian Cemetery (Row C, Grave NO. 5), France. It is believed that the sketch was made prior to him going overseas to France. John Robert Gray was the eldest son of Emma (nee Beckett) and John Gray. His father John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. The rotunda built in the Surrey Gardens by the Progress Association in 1912 was dedicated to him. He married Emma Beckett in 1888 at 'Guildford Villa' in Essex Road, the Beckett home. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. The Alan Holt property register identifies this as 24 Arundel Crescent, known as 'Tumberumba'. Mabel Pye was a printmaker and painter. She was born in Box Hill in 1894, probably at the family’s Loch Street property. She was the daughter of Alice Eleanor Noar and her husband William Edward Pye, who married in 1893. William was known as Ted and is recorded in electoral rolls as a legal clerk and later as a public servant. Mabel had a sister Hazel who was also an artist, but less well known. 12 Loch Street, Surrey Hills was known as ‘Mulberry Hill’ and the Pyes appear to be the first occupants – Alan Holt’s register of Surrey Hills properties has them there from c1900. The property was originally about an acre in size and was later divided into 4 house blocks. In 1923 they built a house for themselves on one of the blocks facing Benwerrin Street and called it ‘Tanglewood’. The Loch Street house abutted the Surrey Hills Reservoir and was diagonally linked to the land in Benwerrin Street. In 2019 both the houses still stand. The family were involved in amateur theatre and at times the studio doubled as a rehearsal space for the Benwerrin Players, a group which operated through the late 1920s and early 1930s being comprised of friends and neighbours from Benwerrin Street and Windsor Crescent. Some of their performances were at the Surrey Hall in Union Road. Most of Mabel’s known work dates from the 1930s. She had studied under Bernard Hall at the National Gallery School. Mabel was a member of both the Victorian Artists Society from 1918-1941 and also the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors from 1920-1950. Her work is represented in the Australian National Collection and in state galleries. The NGV has one of her works, the Gallery of NSW has 9 works, a large body of works and personal material is held by the Ian Potter Collection and there is one piece in the City of Whitehorse Collection. This ink sketch of the White Horse Hotel is signed MP and dated 1933, the year the building was demolished. His dates: 1913-1993. ‘Kenilworth’, 9 Beatrice Avenue was home of Edmund Holt, his wife and 3 sons Ray, Fred and Alan who attended Surrey Hills State School in their primary years. The family were very involved with the Methodist (Uniting) Church. Alan became organist and for some years also played at the Canterbury Presbyterian Church. He was well-liked from his days as a newspaper delivery boy, and after marriage lived at 62 Broughton Road and then 2 Earle Street taking part in various local activities with his wife Edna and three boys. After completing his secondary education at University High Alan joined the Public Service and after a time in the Premier’s Department moved to the Lands Department. He became Secretary of that department and after retirement moved to 13 Berry Street, Box Hill. He keenly researched the history of Surrey Hills. This hat belonged to Mrs Moyra Rasmussen, who lived at 389 St Kilda Street, Brighton for over 50 years with her husband Rae Rasmussen, a bank manager with the State Bank of Victoria. The Mooney sisters, Nell and Ida, were situated beside the Regent Theatre in Collins Street, Melbourne and were well respected milliners and dressmakers. The hat's style is typical of the 1960s. This item is from the "Barone" Collection. "Barone" (also known as "Seaview") was a stately Brighton home built at 9 Moule Avenue prior to 1855 and demolished in 1986. The house's residents included Edward Elgin Browne (during 1859-72), a Melbourne tea merchant, and the family and descendants of retired Scottish Army captain Archibald Black (during the period 1880-1970). Its neighbors included “St Ninians” owned by the Ward- Cole family, “Seacombe” owned by the Moule family, and the home of James Grahame and his family. The items in the "Barone" collection were largely donated by two of the house's later owners, Mrs Doris Halkyard and Mrs Brian Brandt.Black silk satin, lace and beaded pelerine from c.1890. The pelerine features a silk high stand collar covered in black lace. It secures around the neck and down the centre front to the waist by seven hook and eye closures. A black lace frill extends down the centre front from the throat to the centre front tip of the garment. The shoulders feature a heavy, intricately beaded floral design open sleeve through which the arm would be visible. The sleeve finishes around the elbow in a point, however the beading hangs down to below the hip in a loose fringe. At the back from below the shoulder, the garment shapes in to finish in a tapered 'V' shape over the wearer's coccyx. This dress was made for and belonged to Mrs Elizabeth McLachlan (nee Duncan, 1820-1904), wife of Reverend John Hamilton McLachlan (1813-1908), who was the first Minister of St Cuthbert's Presbyterian Church in Brighton. Elizabeth and John were married at the Free Church of Ayr at Lindsaystonn in the Parish of Kirkmickach, Ayrshire, Scotland on 15 October 1849. At this time his occupation was listed as "Minister of Presbyterian Church" and hers as "Governess". They left for Australia on the 1 November 1849 and arrived in Australia 6 months later. Apparently John's hair turned snow white during the journey due to his seasickness! The McLachlans first went to Geelong upon their arrival in 1850, then to the Western District, then Brighton, then Talbot at the height of the gold mining era. The couple had seven children: John Campbell Duncan McLachlan (b. Geelong, October 1850), Mary McLachlan (b. Geelong, November 1851), Agnes McLachlan (b. Hopkins River near Wickliff, May 1853), twins Elizabeth and Walter McLachlan (b. June 1854), Elizabeth McLachlan (b. Hesham, June 1855), Margaret McLachlan (b. Brighton, 1857). Elizabeth died in 1904. She and John are both buried in Amherst Cemetery. The dress was donated by one of her granddaughters. This circa 1849 silk blue grey window pane check dress features a high round neck and pleats on either shoulder extending over the natural shoulder line. The dress shows evidence of nine ornamental buttons down the centre front with only four blue silk buttons currently still attached. The dress fastens with thirteen concealed hook and eye closures to the waist. The Pagoda sleeves inset into the bodice in a small high armhole flaring out and finishing just below the elbow. A pale blue silk ribbon with a diagonal drawn stitch design decorates the front of the sleeve in a simple geometric design. The Pagoda sleeve is lined in a matching pale blue silk. The full skirt is pleated into the waistband and finishes just above the floor at the front. At the back the bodice features a squared off design to the princess panels shaping the dress into the body. The skirt is heavily pleated at the centre back into the waistline and finishes slightly longer at the back than the front. The dress is an excellent example of mid-1970s evening wear and comes with its original box and dockets. It was purchased from a local op shop by a Brighton Historical Society volunteer, who subsequently donated it to BHS in 2017. The receipts tell us that the dress was originally purchased from Georges department store on Collins Street by Mrs Eunice Amelia Hill (b. 1917) of 6 Webb Street, Brighton. Eunice placed the dress on lay-by and paid for alterations in December 1974; it was delivered to her home in January 1975.Full-length knit dress of blue, green and silver patterned lurex with Georges box and receipts. This dress and bag belonged to Mrs Edith "Dot" Paroissien (nee Jackson, born 1916), who lived in Brighton with her husband David William Paroissien. The dress was purchased from Croyde, a Melbourne designer who had a small boutique shop in Collins Street near the Block Arcade, and the bag was bought for her in London by David. Dot recalled wearing the dress in the 1950s, in particular to a ball at the Royal Exhibition Buildings for Wesley College. She wore it with suede shoes with a medium heel with straps across the instep and long white kid gloves, and accessorised with a baguette choker and drop earrings.Black silk satin sleeveless full-length evening dress. Louris Holly Larsen-Disney married Percy James White at Melbourne Grammar Chapel on 17 June 1948. In later years the dress was given to an opportunity shop and purchased by Mrs Landells of the Brighton Historical Society. Louris subsequently visited the Society and recognised her dress, and was able to provide BHS with information on it. Also in the Society's collection is a 1950s pink strapless silk chiffon dress worn by Louris, and a wedding photo of Louris taken at her mother and stepfather's home at 53 South Road, Brighton. Purchased from an opportunity shop, this dress is a stage costume bearing the label of Bonn & Mackenzie, a prominent UK costume designer from the 1950s to the 1970s. The dress appears to have been worn by June Bronhill (1929-2005), a prominent Australian opera singer and actress, whose name is handwritten on the label. Born June Mary Gough, she began using the stage name of Bronhill in 1952 in honour of her NSW home town of Broken Hill as a form of thanks to the local community who had helped raise money to send her overseas for professional training as a singer. Bronhill trained in London and gained early exposure with the English National Opera. She went on to star in many theatrical productions in Australia and the UK. She moved back to Australia permanently in 1976, and in 1980 was cast in her first television role as Mrs Crawford in the Australian version of 'Are You Being Served?'.Full-length short-sleeved dress of white cotton, lace and nylon, featuring elaborately ruffled sleeves and vertical stripes of lace on the skirt and bodice. In 1988 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip travelled across Australia to take part in the bicentenary celebrations. In April Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrived in Geelong to open the Wool Week Display in the almost complete National Wool Centre. Crowds gathered to welcome the royal couple, wool shearing demonstrations took place outside the centre and “Spud” the sheepdog exhibited his heading talents. During their visit to the wool centre they were met by the chairman of the Geelong Regional Commission, Mr Colin Atkins and Mrs Monique Atkins. The Queen was presented with a rug woven by the museums 1910 gripper-type Axminster Jacquard carpet loom and the Duke was presented with a woollen jumper. In return the Queen presented three letters from the archives of the Windsor Castle to the museum. The couple left in the afternoon, charming the Geelong crowd. Sir Rohan Delacombe opens the new wing of Mirridong Nursing home, named in honour of long-time and tireless worker, Katharine Rose.
