Photocopied newspaper cutting from Bendigo Advertiser 22nd Dec 1952, pertaining to donation of Joseph Brady bound notebooks. Brady was engineer of the Bendigo Waterworks in 1858 and accepted appointment as engineer to the contractors of the construction of a segment of the Melbourne Sandhurst railway. One book was related to the Bendigo Waterworks containing particulars of Crusoe Reservoir. The other surrounding Cornish & Bruce contracts for the middle section of the Mt Alexander Railway. Books donated to Bendigo by Mrs A Strickland of Currie King Island, Brady's granddaughter. The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Excerpt of George Russell's Manuscript Diary copied by William Lewis. George Russell, from Scotland joined his brother Philip in 1831 in Tasmania, and farmed there for five years under his supervision. He then followed John Batman's exploratory lead to Port Phillip in March 1836. George Russell later established Golf Hill Station at Shelford. These memoirs describe first visits by Europeans to Lal Lal falls (which weren't running) and Mt Buninyong. These records must have been sought out by the AHRS as Russell had died before the Society was established.

Taken in 1944, depicted is an aerial view of an Australian military camp set up at Mt. Stanley in Victoria. There are two large tents along with a vehicle and trailer surrounded by bushland. A secret experimental micro-wave radio station was established and tested at this site by the Army Signal Detachment Unit during World War II. It was part of an experimental Ultra High Frequency (UHF) link between Melbourne and Sydney. At the time, it was highly classified. It intended to enquire into the hitherto unexplored transmission of micro-waves; that is, a radio signal which could only be transmitted by line of sight, and thus required hill-top to hill-top location.The photograph is historically significant as it pertains to World War II; the largest global conflict in history. This significance is enhanced by Australia's prominent involvement in campaigns across the Pacific, particularly on land in New Guinea and across the Huon Peninsula. It was also the first time that the Australian mainland came under direct attack by the Axis, with Japanese forces targeting north-west Australia and Sydney Harbour. These battles became Australia's largest and most complex offensives during the war. The record is also historically significant as it relates to the Royal Australian Corps of Signals, or "RA Sigs". This significance is strengthened by Australia's unique distinction of having the first established signal unit under the British Empire. This unit provides electronic warfare. They enable commanders to implement highly dynamic battle control against opposing forces by using a number of methods including radio, fibre optic, micro-wave, information systems and satellite links. The record has strong research potential. This is due to the ongoing scholarly and public interest in war, military history, the ANZAC legend, and the continuing existence of the RA Sigs. The Dederang-Mt. Beauty Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Tallangatta & District Football League. The club is based in Dederang, Victoria and Mount Beauty, Victoria. It was formed in the early1900s and disbanded in 1976 when it merged with Mount Beauty to form Dederang-Mount Beauty football club. In 1948 the competition received a boost with an influx of new players who came to work on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. George and Gordon Hobbs were the famous Hobbs brothers of Dederang which two Premierships were built around. Four brothers starred in Dederang’s First Flag in the Tallangatta League in 1958. Dederang Football Club was one of the earliest recorded football clubs in the Kiewa Valley area. Many players came from pioneering farming families in the area and there were often several boys from the same family playing in the team. Edmondson's Hut is a cattleman's hut on the Bogong High Plains. Jim Edmondson obtained Run 33 (near Mt Nelse) in the early 1930s. He pre cut the timber at his property in Tawonga and along with iron for the walls, chimney and roof took it up to the Bogong High Plains on pack horse. The hut's wall and ceiling were lined and the hut had a 'fairly good floor and bunks'. In 1971 the hut was donated to the Education Department and was approved for transfer by the Lands Department in 1974. Bogong Outdoor School camp has been using the hut for students to camp in as well as National Fitness parties when walking in the area. The upper Kiewa Valley was settled from the mid 1860s and from its earliest days cattle were taken on to the Bogong High Plains to graze during summer. Jim Edmondson took his cattle from the Kiewa Valley to Mt Fainter and later to Run 33, near Mt Nelse. The Junction Dam was built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. This photo show its construction in February 1940. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria were the employers of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. The work included building dams, power stations and the infrastructure for the work and their employees. Mt Beauty and Bogong village were the places where this scheme was built and where this photo shows part of its construction being Power Station 3. Originally there were 3 Hydro stations built from the 1930's onwards. The scheme finished being built in 1960 and is the biggest Hydro electricity scheme in Victoria.This photo has Historic significance due to Junction Dam built as part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. This image appears to have been taken from Ballarat Base Hospital, looking east over Drummond Street to Mt Warrenheip. The City Fire Brigade tower painted white can be seen to the right, while St Andrew's Kirk dominates the middle ground of the photograph. Many photographs over the years have been taken from this viewpoint, and are interesting to compare. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. When Mrs Strange died some years ago, her extensive slide collection was sorted through and those relevant to Ballarat were gifted to the Ballarat Library.mount warrenheip, ballarat east

John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. William Lucas , who came from England to visit Matthew Child in the late 1870s. He purchased land from Matthew and married his daughter Catherine. They developed their property as the sporting lodge 'Glenrivers'. Their daughter Dorothea was born in 1888. She was an accomplished horsewoman who married her cousin Charles Percival (Percy) Child in 1917.
