The Boxer Rebellion, Boxer Uprising or Yihetuan Movement was a violent anti-foreign, anti-colonial and anti-Christian uprising that took place in China between 1899 and 1901, toward the end of the Qing dynasty.The Rifle was brought back to Australia by the Victorian Naval Brigade on their return from China. The Roulettes are the Royal Australian Air Force's formation aerobatic display team. They provide about 150 flying displays a year, in Australia and in friendly countries around the Southeast Asian region. The Roulettes form part of the RAAF Central Flying School at RAAF Base East Sale, Victoria.In 1970, the Roulettes were formed to celebrate the RAAF's 50th anniversary to be held throughout the year of 1971. By 1914, when Australia joined the war against Germany, there were 23 Light Horse regiments of militia volunteers. Many men from these units joined the Light Horse regiments of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Initially Australia promised four regiments of Light Horse, 2000 men, to fight in the British cause. By the end of the war, 16 regiments would be in action.The Light Horse were seen as the “national arm of Australia’s defence” and young men, most from the country, flocked to join. This photo is from 1917 and is of Private Harry Groves (standing) with his cousin Arthur Whitter (seated). Private Groves was the Uncle of Ron Ellis, who was a Lara Sub-Branch member. Cpl. Ronald Warren Ellis, EM (VX502517) was born in Brunswick in 1927. His family moved to Lara when he was young, and his schooling took place at the Lara State School. After finishing his education, Ron took up employment at Sims Coopers in Corio. Ron was enlisted in the second AIF at Melbourne, and posted to the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion at Greta west of Newcastle, NSW. After 3 months training, he was sent to the Service Corps Training Centre for driver and maintenance training in Ingleburn, south of Sydney. When this course was completed, Ron was posted to the Australian Army Service Corps as a driver motor vehicle with the 2nd AIF. Rons service with the AIF lasted 425 days, when he was then transferred to the Interim Army for a further 309 days. The duration of his service was in NSW. Ron was discharged from the Army in Melbourne on the 4th of May 1948. In 1957, Ron enlisted in the CMF and served with 22nd Construction Squadron for 17 years with the last 5 as a Corporal, and was awarded the Efficiency Medal for long service and good conduct. This photo represents the connection that Lara RSL members and their family members have to the conflicts that Australia has been involved in over time. 'Swag' nickname of Horace Samuel LONG who enlisted in the 9th Light Horse Regt No 437 on 17.9.1914 age 19 years. He transferred to the 4th L.H.Regt on 27.9.1916 and allotted No 437A. There is an Alexis Harold Safstrom No 1723, 38th Batt 1st reinforcements then 59th Batt. He was WIA twice and discharged on 31.8.1919. There are two Woodheads with an initial L. This is possibly L.H.B Woodhead No 728, 8th Batt then late in the war 25th Batt. He was WIA twice coming home late 1918. The colour patch on the uniform is possibly 8th Batt. Safstrom was from Heathcote which fits in with the donor of the items Mrs May Burns. Woodhead was from Mildura. The only connection could be that they were both in England at the same time the card was written. The two cyclists were taken prisoner in North Africa. The prisoners gave the photo to Colin Odlum and the result was that the photo came back to Australia and given to William (Billy) Bird who loaned the photo to the Cycling Club in Bendigo. In March 2003 military forces of the Coalition of the Willing, including 2,000 men & women of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) invaded Iraq. Since July 2003 working with the interim Iraqi Government, the ADF has continued to contribute to Multinational Force efforts to develop a secure & stable environment in Iraq & assist national recovery programs. William Ellis NEWTON VC enlisted in the RAAF no 250748 on 5.2.1940 age 20 years 8 months. Serving with No 22Sqd RAAF flying Boston Bombers he arrived in New Guinea in May 1942. Along the way he was promoted to Pilot Officer, Flying Officer and then Flight Lieutenant. On the 18.3 1943 during a low level attack on Japanese positions around Salamaua he hit his target but his plane was hit several times by flack and burst into flames but he landed it in the sea. Sgt B.G Eastwood No 13055 a crew member went down with the aircraft. Newton and Flt Sgt J Lyon No 401706 swam to shore but were captured by the Japanese. Newton was taken to Lae for interrogation and then returned to Salamaua and was executed by decapitation and his body thrown in bomb crater on 29.3.1943. His body was later recovered in late 1943 when Australian troops captured Salamaua. Lyons was executed at Lae by bayoneting in the back. The award to Newton of the Victoria Cross was for low level attacks in the Salamaua area which inflicted heavy losses on Japanese installations one of which his plane was hit by flak heavily and he successfully flew it back some 180 miles and landed. The award also included the attack for which he was executed.
