Documents the history of the Shrine by interspersing images of war with returned servicemen's marches. The film shows archival images of Australia in 1914 and accounts from WWI, which gave rise to the campaign to build the Shrine in the 1920s. Gen.Sir John Monash, after consulting with Legacy, lent his support and it was opened in 1934 by the Duke of Gloucester, becoming the focus of commemoration in Victoria. The forecourt with the Eternal Flame was added in 1954 to commemorate the fallen of WWII and was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II. Junior Legatees are shown paying their respects at one of their annual commemorations. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Henry Christian (c.1809-91) was one of the first settlers in Kew. He arrived in Victoria with his wife Agnes and son Orlando in 1855 on the Gypsy Queen. He established a rope-making business in Bulleen Road by 1858 but was declared insolvent two years later. In his final years, he was celebrated as one of the oldest living settlers of the district. His son, Orlando Henry Beater Christian (c.1853-1930) became a member of the Hawthorn Band and a foundation member of the Willsmere Swimming Club. Orlando and his wife Elizabeth had four children: Henry Beater (1886-1962), Ada Susannah May (1888-1962), Orlando Julius (1891-1917) and Lilian Adelaide ( -1956). Ada was to marry into the Washfold family. Date is approximate; early Empire Day celebrations were held in May each year between 1906 and 1911 to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday. Headmaster, George Bennett was later headmaster at Balwyn State School, which his son Gordon (later General Gordon Bennett) attended. Miss Amy Wise was a teacher at Surrey Hills State School for her entire career. (There is information in filing cabinet re Amy Wise). Note (undated) from John Reaburn states that an issue of SHNN claimed Major General Bennett was a pupil at SHPS. He stated: "I very much doubt this, as he was 19 years of age when his father was headmaster in 1906. Before that the whole family attended Balwyn State School. The statement should be substantiated or corrected".Black and white photo copied from a postcard of staff and students assembled outside Surrey Hills Primary School for Empire Day celebrations. Some children carry Union Jack flags. The cadet corps of the school stands in line on the path against the picket fence of the school carrying drums and 'rifles'. The photo is taken in Beatrice Avenue looking towards Canterbury Road. To recognise the dedication and service of non-military persons, the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (civil order) was established. Shortened to MBE, the award consists of a silver cross with a circular centre and a fleur de lis attached on four sides. Above the north facing fleur de lis is a crown which is connected to a rose pink crossgrain ribbon with pearl grey edges, and tied into a bow. In the central part is the profile of King George V and Queen Mary, and the words 'For God and Empire' in raised letters against a roughened background edging the portrait. On the rear are the copperplate letters 'GRI' (which stand for Georgius Rex Imperator) and an image of a crown directly above this. It is designed to be worn on the left hand side by the female recipient. After the second world war there was a decision made to create a memorial for the 1939-45 War at the Shrine. A competition was held and 53 entries assessed. The first prize was shared between two submissions and the third prize money was also awarded. These two documents show that Legatee Kemsley was one of the Assessors who decided the basis of design for the memorial. The notes of a meeting of the Assessors show that Mr W. Balcombe Griffiths, Mr Marcus Martin, Colonel Kemsley and Sir Edmund Herring (Chairman of the Shrine Trustees) were present when the winning design was chosen. The design was later completed as the Forecourt in the shape of a paved cross, built in 1953, and the Cenotaph surmounted by a statuary group and the Eternal Flame. The memorial was dedicated and the flame set alight by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on February 28 1954.A record of the decisions made by the committee that chose the design of the memorial for the 1939-45 war that was built as the Forecourt, the Cenotaph and the Eternal Flame at the Shrine of Remembrance. Joynt was the seventh member of the newly formed Legacy in 1923 and became a member of the Board of Management in 1924 and worked closely with Stan Savige. He was also instrumental in gaining the support of both General Sir John Monash and the R.S.L. to build the Shrine of Remembrance, as well as ensuring media backing and thus public support for the project. He worked tirelessly for Legacy for 38 years until he retired at the age of 84, and entered fully into comradeship activities throughout his involvement. Joseph Anderson Panton lived through the entire reign of Queen Victoria and in over 60 years of being in Australia saw the country advance from the earliest gold-rush days through to the first decade of Federation. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at the intersection of Smith St Gertrude St. Fitzroy. The workmen are excavating the former cable tram track The inbound cable tram track remains in position. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. The second image is from a Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works plan (part) No. 1217 - Collingwood for the intersection, obtained for reference from the State Library of Victoria Collection of MMBW Plans. It shows the layout of the cables and the large sheave pit that the cable itself passed around. The trams were required to drop the cable from the grip prior to the entry to the curve and then coast around. Brass gift box, presented to serving military personnel in World War 1. Attributed as being the brainchild of Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. On top of tin the head of the Princess is surrounded by a laurel wreath. Embossed on top 'Imperium Britannicum', on bottom 'Christmas 1914' This tin was found in a secretaire given to Graham Hookey, inside the tin is gold woven epaulette, nibs for a dip pen and a small lock 'Miller' embossed on front. Also enclosed are two medals - one metal 'volunteered for active service' printed around outside of medal, other two appear to be off a uniform, another 'corps of engineers' gold badge.
