The artist, Clifton Pugh, grew up in Briar Hill. He served in WWII and settled at Cottles Bridge, building his own house and forming Dunmoochin artist colony. He married three times and had two sons. Alan Martin is a realist painter who started painting seriously aged 11 and studied under Max Meldrum for more than six years, supporting himself as a dental technician for 20 years while painting. About 1965 he started teaching painting, by 1980 having more than 120 students. He was married and had 6 children.
