Photograph: Frank and Rosalie Sheehan The photograph was taken at a memorial luncheon for the late Norm Borchers. The event was held at Sebastopol Bowling Club and Frank Sheehan was a guest speaker. Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955. He was a long time supporter of Ballarat Trades Hall. Frank Sheehan was the state member for Ballarat South, serving from 1982-1992. A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Also Legatee Eddie Jowett led some singing. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Seated with the widows is President David Millie who was president in 1995. Another shows Legatee George Woodward laughing with widow Mollie Thiele (in purple). Also President Millie in the kitchen thanking Audrey, the lady who ran the kitchen, and her helpers. Audrey is on the far right, next to her is Joan Miller. A letter from Legatee Meldrum recalling memories about Legatee Stan Savige. It is addressed to Legatee Kemsley who was on the archive committee at the time. Legatee Meldrum was a dentist and Stan was a patient of his. During a visit there was a discussion that Meldrum could help convince Sir John Monash to be President of Legacy as he used to play tennis with his son-in-law. It goes on the recount how Sir John suggested the role to Harold Cohen. Part of what was written: 'I did speak to Sir John the next Sunday. He was very interested but said he just could not take the office because his hands were so full with Yallourn. He said "Don't worry, let me give you some advice. If ever you want a job - a good job - done go to a busy man." Later as I was leaving Sir John called me into his study and said "I took my own advice today and asked a very busy man to take on the job you asked me to do. You know Harold Cohen because you always sit at his table at the Club. Well I've told him I would like him to think about taking the Chairmanship. Now it's up to you. Arrange for Savige and others to meet him". Which I did. Being originally a 6th Brigader I knew nearly everyone interested and I had known Pip Powell for six years before the war. I did attend a committee meeting just before the first luncheon at Stan's invitation but had not formally joined. Luncheon reception held at Austin Hospital, Heidelberg to open appeal for the Stage 2 Building Appeal. L-R: Mr H. Foletta, Chairman of Austin Hospital Appeals Committee, Cr. J.O. White, J.P., Shire President, The Hon. R.J. Hamer, E.D., M.P., Premier of Victoria, and Treasuer and Minister of the Arts. The July 1973 appeal's target was $500,000, which with government subsidies aimed to pay for a nine-story building alongside stage one - a combined ten-storey teaching, research and medical centre. The new block was planned to provide the Austin Hospital with 218 additional beds, eight extra operating theartres and a comprehensive range of medical, diagnostic, therapeutic and anciliary services. The hospital conducted a door knock appeal in the Heidelberg and Eltham districts on Sunday July 22. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' A photo of three men, the two in uniform are former junior legatees that were helped to achieve admission to Southampton Naval College UK when they visited Legacy in 1964. These two outstanding junior legatees that were featured in the June 1957 newsletter. The article explains that Ron Rudd was a member of Footscray classes. And John Woodley had lived at Harelands. Both won entry to the greatest school of navigation at Southhampton UK, which lead to successful careers and were welcomed to Legacy luncheons when they were back in Australia. It is possible these two junior legatees had returned to Legacy in 1964 when this photo was taken. The man is the centre is Ivan Layton, Executive Officer of Legacy for 30 years. John Woodley's brother, Arthur, was also looked after by Legacy and in 1990 he wrote of his life and how Legacy helped him in a document (see item 00107).Many junior legatees enlisted in the services in the second World War. Some returned and joined Legacy as Legatees. This is a photocopy of a book, the original is no longer available. It contains lists of guest speakers at Legacy functions, and the date they spoke and some comments about what they spoke on or how good they were. The dates are from 1926 to the 1980s. Guest speakers include Lord Baden Powell, (founder of the boy scouts movement), Sir Henry Bolte (Premier of Victoria), Sir Edward Dunlop (Burma Railway Fame), Patsy Adam - Smith (Author) to name a few. The list also notes the speakers title, honours/awards/qualifications, subject matter, date. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A photocopy of 7 pages of Chapter 13 from Legatee Donovan Joynt's biography 'Breaking the road for the rest'. Legatee Donovan had received a VC in World War 1. Chapter 13 deals with Legatee Joynt's involvement with Legacy. It covers some of the early years of Legacy's history as he was present at the first luncheon. He mentions it was Mr PW Powell (Pip) that proposed the name Legacy - other accounts attribute the idea to Frank Selleck. It seems Legatee Powell suggested the idea but it was Legatee Selleck that proposed the formal motion and was documented in the minutes. Joynt mentions: "The speaker emphasised that the name Legacy was chosen because it the members of the new organisation had accepted as a legacy the responsibility of seeing that the ideals which their comrades had died fighting for were maintained in Australia." Rosalie Sheehan is his wife. Sharon Knight (middle) was successor to Karen Overington. Knight is now the state member for Wendouree. She has a background in health and community sectors, including having managed Lifeline in Ballarat. At the time the photo was taken Knight was the candidate for Ballarat West. Old Bridge on Main Hurstbridge road in Diamond Creek township crossing the Diamond Creek. The bridge opened in April 1898. Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record (Vic. : 1882 - 1902), Friday 22 April 1898, page 2 "Diamond Creek Bridge. The official opening of this bridge took place yesterday (Thursday) in the presence of a large gathering of people. The bridge-a substantial iron structure, costing .~r 2oo-was profusely decorated with "flags of all nations" for the occasion. In the absence of the Minister' of Public Works-who was unavoidably prevented from attending-the opening ceremony was neatly performed by President Lugton, of the Heidelberg Shire, in a few wellchosen words, after which an adjournment was made to the Literary Institute, where some sixty gentlemen were entertained at luncheon, followed by speeches, songs, and recitations. It was a red letter day for the Creek, and everything passed off with becoming eclat." This document discusses the many options available to Melbourne Legacy in matters such as:- A) Disposal of Legacy House (293 Swanston St, Melbourne), redeveloping the existing site, selling the building and remain as a tenant or moving to another location. Many variations of these options are discussed. B) Whether Legacy luncheons would or should continue, would any of the above options reduce widow visits to Legacy House. C) Matters that would influence the sale price and/or costs of alterations. D) Reasons for/against various options E) Recommendations. There are 5 recommendations in total. The above items are followed up by some observations during the discussions but not central to the brief. A precis of items from submissions relating directly or indirectly upon the disposal of Legacy House A report regarding salary and staffing levels levels, the number of committtees, staff organization and Legatees interactions with staff employed by Legacy. This is followed up by several recommendations. At the time entering the above information 14/9/2018 Legacy House has not been sold but some of the floor space has been rented out. Much of what is discussed in this report (August 1984) is about making the Legacy dollar go further and any positive/adverse effects on the primary purpose of taking care of the widows and the efficient running of Melbourne Legacy. P., dated 21 10 1994, to Don Taggert President, HistoricalSociety of St Kilda, Inc, inviting him to a luncheon to discuss the involvement of the community in the program Australia Remembers, 1945 – 1995 commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War 2.Includes time – line of proposed activities, suggested activities, and map of venue meeting. Australia remembers, 1945 – 1945, five page booklet (4 copies) on proposed program for fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War 2. Includes list of key people, criteria for grant approvals, and time – line. 3. Two more copies of the previous. 4. A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. In 1994 the author Patsy Adam-Smith was a personality of the year helping to promote Legacy. She attended the lunch and in one photo is with Legatee Eddie Jowett and widow Mollie Thiele (red jacket). Legatee Eddie Jowett led the Legatees in singing to the widows. There was also a pianist and a female singer attending. Two legatees reading a song sheet are George Standish and Maurie Lockwood. Legatee Lucky Luscombe can be seen in a false moustache posing for the camera. Also a photo of the hard work being done in the kitchen. Audrey the kitchen lady is obscured at far right. It appears to be Joan Miller with her back to the camera, and Sue Sargent (a widow who helped a lot in the kitchens) is on the right hand side. Other ladies names in the photos are not known. The following year more Legatees followed Lucky's lead and wore false moustaches to provide entertainment. Forming the headwaters of the Johanna River and noted for its majestic Myrtle Beech and Blackwood trees, in 1921 the property came into the possession of Mrs Jessie Fry, wife of Mr Thomas Fry, a well-known and respected local bushman and timber getter. Here the family lived and it was Mrs Fry who named the place 'Melba Gully'. Sometime in the late 1920s Mrs Fry was approached by Pioneer Tours, the bus company, to see if she would provide lunches and afternoon teas for their passengers travelling between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell. Mrs Fry rose to the challenge; the Melba Gully Luncheon Rooms were built adjoining the Fry home and she was in business. Mrs Fry was unfailing in her courtesy and kindness. She was also a splendid cook, known for her feather-light scones and sponges. Home-produced strawberries and cream were a special treat. Visitors were also taken on a tour of 'The Gully', often guided by one of her young sons. Melba Gully Visitors Book is testimony to her many satisfied customers. Tom and Jessie Fry sold the property on her retirement in 1947 and the tearooms ceased to operate. It again changed hands in 1958 to Otway residents Mr and Mrs Axel Madsen, and in 1975 they made the magnificent gesture of gifting the 48 hectare Melba Gully to the people of Victoria..Framed painting in oils of a weatherboard house with picket fence, before a backdrop of forest.
