The Walton Street Fire Brigade building was constructed in 1893 (Rogers, 1973) replacing an earlier building on the site constructed for the Kew Volunteer Fire brigade. The building was demolished in 1941. William Derrick was an early landowner in Kew, and with James Venn Morgan and James Dannock the purchaser of the parcel of land bounded by Cotham Road, High Street and Mary Street. Elizabeth Mackie was a member of the Kew Historical Society and a resident of 1 Molesworth Street. She researched and wrote the booklet 'Artists of Kew' and initiated research into authors with a connection to Kew. One of the most important maps of Kew in the KHS Collection is 'Back to Kew' created by Jesse Dannock. This water damaged map was in many places unreadable, and this re-creation by Elizabeth Mackie only included part of the original text. Dorothy Rogers (A History of Kew, 1973) records that "the tree, with increasing age became a safety risk, and was at first lopped, but when the land was subdivided some years ago it was removed all together. In Bowyer Avenue, which bears a family name of the Millers, a memorial has been erected which commemorates the tree."
