This photograph is of the construction of the first road bridge over the Genoa River - 1915. Before today's timber truss and concrete bridge was constructed between 1926-1928 by contractor J.T. Noble Anderson, two earlier bridges crossed the Genoa River at this location. They provided crucial links in the Princes Highway route from Melbourne to Sydney. The letter on the back of the postcard was written by Gordon ? to Alex ? on 2nd October 1917. "this represents the opening of Genoa Bridge. Mrs Alexander cutting the ribbon and Mr Martin holding it at the other side. Did most of the speaking. The gent holding the roll of paper is who came to open the bridge. I can't think of his name. This postcard was produced in the 1950's for the tourist trade in the Kiewa Valley and Alpine region. It encompasses the period when the State of Victoria was pressured by the ever increasing demand by industry and its population for electricity supplies. Hydro electricity was seen as an untapped natural resource to quench this demand. The Victorian Alps and the rivers flowing into its valleys was ideal for the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. The late 1940's saw the development of this scheme and the changing of sections of alpine landscape is covered by this and other postcards/pictures (tourists, construction workers, and established rural populations). This period in time was before the established wildlife and forest/nature groups became political activist who changed legislative acts to protect the environment.This rural region (Kiewa Valley/alpine plains) was at most only significant to a smaller group of winter sports, summer hikers/horse riders and rural farmers/graziers. The numbers of tourists and the increase in the local resident population was boosted by the construction of the Hydro Electricity Scheme. This influx to the regional population resulted in a corresponding diversity in services and brought about an environment that responded to a growing level of tourists and thereby permitting this industry to grow more rapidly than it would have naturally. This postcard details an attraction to the "cleaner" method of providing electricity. This postcard was purchased in 1950 by a surveyor at Landford's Gap.This black and white photograph from a Valentine's postcard is from a V2 Argus photograph postcard. One of a group of photographs salvaged from a fire, which took place in late 2007 or early 2008, at the cellars building that is now the home of the Rutherglen Estate tasting rooms and the Tuileries restaurant and accommodation. The building started as the cellars of D.G. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling around Europe either during World War 1 or just after, before returning to Australia. The link to Legacy is not known but there are many postcards are in the collection.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. The Geelong Harbour Trust Band was one of five brass bands existing in the Geelong area in the early 1900's. They were quite successful in competition under the direction of conductor Mr Harry Shugg. After their conductor, Harry Shugg left to conductor the Malvern Tramways Band in 1915, the band merged with the Geelong Municipal Band to become the Geelong City Band.This postcard is significant as it provides a historical window on this (former) brass band and their achievements. The A.B.C. Band was formed in the early 1930's and performed for radio broadcasts and other events. Their Conductor Mr Harry Shugg was very famous in the banding community having previously conducted the Geelong Harbour Trust Band and at this time was conducting the Malvern Tramways Band. He was also active as an adjudicator of band competitions.The significance of this postcard is that it shows another aspect of the career of Harry Shugg and also the A.B.C. These photographs relate to the East Gippsland Railway. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. Orbost Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as the terminus of the Orbost railway line, and closed in 1987. The station was located on the west side of the Snowy River despite the town of Orbost being on the east side of the river, in order to save on the costs of a bridge over the river, which at the time had highly variable levels. RMS Oceana postcard produced by Vienna Studio, 68 Beach Street, Port Melbourne. The Vienna Studio was run by Austrian-born Kallman FEITEL, first in Richmond around 1902 then in Port Melbourne from around 1904. The Oceana was built 1887-88 for P&O at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Northern Ireland and sailed on her maiden voyage from London for Melbourne and Sydney on 19 March 1888. The Oceana collided with the Pisagua when leaving the Port of Tilbury, England and sank on 15 March 1912.
