In 2018 GHS members visited Turner's Bakery in Mernda for lunch and continued on to visit historic sites remaining in the Mernda area. This photograph shows the Mernda Mechanics Institute, established 1888. It was sited to the rear of the Bridge Inn Hotel on land donated by the hotel's owner. Plate - SECV dinner plates x2
The SECV had chalets, cafes, mess halls and tea rooms all over Victoria including their construction sites. The SECV had a stores system which purchased thousands of sets of crockery & cutlery for use by personnel. there was a system of chefs, cooks, tea persons etc. to supply food and beverages to the workers. 1921 signified the year the SECV was formed.This dinner plate was used at one of the sites on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which began construction in 1938 and concluded in 1961. Heavy white ceramic oval plate with State Electricity Commission of Victoria 1921 logo/insignia on the inside of one edge - middle of the long side of the plate. The first Minute Book of the Gordon Lodge, which starts with the first meeting of local Freemasons desirous of founding a new lodge in the Essendon area was held at the Ascot Vale Hotel in July 1885. William Farquharson Lamonby was the driving force, financier and founder of the Gordon Lodge and when he wasn't present not a lot happened at those Ascot Vale Hotel meetings. -

Extract from Bendigo Advertiser, January 4th 1864 (Severe Storm) with attached typed note stating that this extract found in relation to the ''heavy rain fall in February last'' (no date! - but about ''a century ago'). Mention in this note that the hotel mentioned - Costello's Axe Creek Bridge Hotel may have been later renamed The Perseverence (sic).
