Viola Annie McVicars (1911–1990) was born in Korumburra on 29 April 1911. At the age of 21, she married William John Ayling (1909–1995). After their marriage in 1932, they moved to Kew, initially to 81 Tennyson Street, and later to 180 Pakington Street. A professional tailoress, Viola Ayling was also a talented amateur potter, creating her ceramics at her home in Pakington Street, where she had an internal studio and a handmade, wood-fired brick kiln in her backyard. Following her death in 1990, her studio pottery passed to her daughter, and following the daughter’s death, to her granddaughter. This piece of glazed earthenware is part of a collection of 15 functional and decorative ceramic items donated by Viola’s granddaughter to the collection in 2024.A handmade oval footed dish, expertly potted and glazed. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Fortuna Villa: George Lansell pursued the deep reef mining industry and bought the rich 180 mine at Victoria Hill, after which he became known as the Quartz King. Within weeks of purchasing the mine he had recovered his outlay. After making so much money, he built Fortuna Villa, a resplendent building of two stories - six rooms on the ground floor and five on the second floor. Printed "ticket" for fund raising - The Australian Tramways & Motor Omnibus Employees' Association Victoria Most Popular Conductress competition - for Mrs. Winifred Gibson of Preston depot. Funds were in aid of the Red Cross Prisoner of War Fund. Has the name of H. Nott, Hon Secretary, Tram depot Malvern. Tickets were donated to the Red Cross fund by the Proprietors of Black and White Cigarettes. Has on the rear an advertisement for the cigarette company. Safety box for fusee matches and DAIDS
The Forests Commission developed the use of helicopters for aerial ignition from the mid 1960s. Bryant and May at Richmond worked with the Commission to develop a Delayed Action Incendiary Device. DAIDs as the were known, had an overall length of 180 mm, striker end length - 10 mm. Ignition end length - 80 mm, then a layer of high melting point wax (to prevent accidental ignition when rubbing together in transit). Both ends coated with a modified match head compound with safety fuse exposed length between coated match ends. There was a 17-second delay from when the small end was struck to an intense flaming of the large end, which lasted for 40 seconds. Other types on large matches known as fusees were also used. Dates of information from 2.11.1902 to 1914, Example of information: Manager's Report 11.1.1912. 'Rope on south drum broke last Saturday, it broke about 100 feet from the surface when the cage was at 2100 feet. No damage done to cage or shaft. We have got the rope out of the shaft abnd started baling. Will have the water out and resume sinking the shaft Saturday morning. Provides a strategy for the future of Melbourne's Public Transport from the Transport Unions and Victorian Trades Hall Council (VHTC) viewpoint. Has an index, list of people involved in the study, provides viewpoints on extensions to the rail and tram networks, revenues, funding and employment conditions. On the inside cover is a light card pocket containing a card library borrowing slip with the name of the report title written on it.
