The train smash occurred in Sunbury between the Station Street level rail crossing and Sunbury Station on February 6th 1952 at around 10pm. The goods train was being pulled by the green locomotive, which was used to take the Jubilee train throughout Victoria in 1951, to acknowledge 125 of European settlement in Victoria, ran into the back of another stationary goods train on the rail line. The guard, A.C Read, in the stationary goods train was killed. P J Mcwhirter, the guard in the other train was injured. 17th April 1919 a stock train travelling north crashed head-on with a goods train coming in the opposite direction. The driver thought he had been given the all-clear to proceed into Sunbury and it was only when the train was approaching the Macedon Street bridge that he saw the red light and it was too late. The accident caused damage to rolling stack and disruption on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. The train coming from Bendigo smashed onto the platform at Sunbury. The driver of the stock train was thrown under the van and suffered a broken arm and facial injuries. The fireman was thrown clear of the tracks. A local Sunbury doctor treated them before they were taken by a casualty train to hospital. A crew from Melbourne came to Sunbury to repair the damage. The track was cleared by that afternoon. This photograph shows the crane lifting steam engine off the platform at Sunbury Station. This rail crash was one of many that has occurred in and near Sunbury and further on the tracks on the Bendigo Line over the years. The Jacksons Creek is prone to flooding when rainfall is very heavy. As part of Environment Day observation, the students from Bulla Primary School enjoyed a tree-planting excursion to nearby Woodlands Park, a nature reserve situated close to Melbourne Airport. This is a photograph of the first committee of the Sunbury Swimming Club which was formed in 1916. The club used the pool at The Nook near Eadie Street. The area had shade trees, a drink fountain, seats, change rooms and diving boards. In 1966 an Olympic size swimming pool was opened in LIgar Street, as a result of a whole community effort. This is an early photograph of St. Mary's Anglican Church in Sunbury. On 13th October 1863, the Government granted one acre of land on the corner of Stawell and O'Shanassy Streets for the building of a church. he first service was held on 24th November 1867. After that date subsequent additions were made. The gas lamp outside the church indicates that the photograph was taken before electric power was installed in Sunbury. The Male Hospital in Sunbury was one of the buildings that was within the grounds of the Sunbury Mental Hospital, later known as the Sunbury Asylum, that opened on 1st December 1879 on She-oak Hill ( Jacksons Hill). Patients and staff from the Ballarat Asylum were transferred there. Prior to the establishment of the Asylum, the Sunbury Industrial School occupied the site from 1865. The Sunbury Asylum, later known as Caloola, continued to operate until the 1992.The Sunbury Mental Hospital was an important institution and was the main source of employment for Sunbury residents for 120 years. The Sunbury Post Office with a residence pictured in the image was the first official post office building in the town. It opened on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets in 1892. Prior to that time postal services were conducted in an office at Sunbury Railway Station. Although the present day post office is still on the Brook-Evans Streets corner, the building has undergone many changes in services and appearances over the years.
