Stamp, IOOF Oddfellows, 20th century
This stamp was used by an Independent Order of Oddfellows organization – the Loyal Warrnambool Lodge. The Independent Order of Oddfellows is a benefit society, founded in the U.S.A., offering medical and employment benefits for its members. Its motto is ‘Friendship, Love, Truth’. A branch was first established in Melbourne in 1846 and the Loyal Victoria Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows was established in Warrnambool in 1860. The Oddfellows Hall in Warrnambool (building still existing) opened in 1869. It is likely that the Loyal Warrnambool Lodge has been established from this original Loyal Victoria Lodge. This stamp is of interest as it has been used by the Loyal Warrnambool Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. Benefit societies such as this one have been influential and important in the social and economic history of Warrnambool. This is a stamp for the Loyal Warrnambool Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. Born in Smeaton, he competed at Ballarat's South Street, conducted the Ballarat Brass Band, and the Ballarat Soldiers' Memorial band before leaving Australia for England as Bandmaster for St Hilda's Brass Band. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born in 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. ... Officers of the Orion Lodge No. 1153, E.C. 1882-83 ...Richard Squire was a student at the Ballarat School of Mines In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age." He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed. MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Ballarat Branch. ... Mr R. B. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consols, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have effected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present day managers of mines. It was decided to invite the author to meet a sub-committee on this subject!Small blue covered booklet from the Orion Lodge given to newly initiated members Written in appropriate Sections Unicorn Hotel Sturt Street Second Monday Five Pounds The sum of two pounds the sum of one pound the sum of one pound Five Pounds orion lodge, robt. e. williams wm, morton s. clark immediate pm, edwin baker s.w., samuel j. morgan j.w., john embling p.m. sec. and treas., frederick c. wainwright s.d, kenneth mciver j.d., thomas blight i.g., john gray s.s., vladimer o. petersen j.s, olof s. olden tyler, joseph josephs p.m., charles dyte p.m., lawrence moran p.m., e. richards, w. rushall, j. embling p.m., d. phillipson, t. sayle p.m., w.h. simpson p.m., g.h. leverton p.m., m.s. clark p.m., c. klug, w.t.c. kelly p.m., donald mcdonald, t. potter p.m., e. baker, r.e. williams, david mcdonald, r. baker, j. dickson, w.l.w. dusautoy, j. kilfedder, o.s. olden, w.g. williams, j.a. burritt, j. brazier, j.m. heriot, t.a. freedman p.m., r.s. barclay, t. blight, a. gibson, j.h. jenkins, a. stevenson, s.j. morgan, f.c. wainwright, k. mciver, g. sara, h. oyston, j. haigh, a. hodge, c. gribble, d. ferguson, d. thomas, o.e. wilson, a.w. williams, j. gray, j. pyke, w. glover, a.b. berry, r. mcrae, v.o. petersen, j. laird, j. hinley, h. ritz, f.j. martell, j. weir, w.h. fisher, f.c. standish d.g.m., t.h. lempriere d.g.s., bye-laws -

Book, Constitutions of the United Grand Lodge of the Ancient, 1922
... Constitutions of the United Grand Lodge of the Ancient ...This book contains the Constitutions of the Freemason Lodges in Victoria. Freemasonry is a world-wide benefit society. Moves were made in the 1860s to establish a Masonic Lodge in Warrnambool with the first Lodge being St. John’s (No. 895). The Masonic Hall in Kepler Street was built in 1870. This book belonged to a member of the Flaxman family and John Flaxman was a prominent Warrnambool resident in the 19th century – an insurance agent and moneylender in the 1860 and 70s and an employee of the auctioneer, Samuel Macgregor. The book, however, seems to belong to a W. Flaxman. John Flaxman had a brother William but, as far as can be ascertained, he did not live in Warrnambool. There is nothing known so far to link this book with Warrnaambool but it is kept because of the name ‘Flaxman’ and so it may have some relevance. This is hard cover book of 142 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering on the front cover. The cover is slightly marked. The inscription on the first page is handwritten in black ink. ‘Br W.S.B.J.Flaxman 24-2-25’ william flaxman, freemasonry in warrnambool -

The Commercial Hotel is now the Delegate Hotel (after 1927). This photograph of the Orbost Brass Band and the Delegate Lodge of UIOOF was presented to the bandmaster by the secretary of the Lodge when the Orbost band went to Delegate to entertain them. They travelled by horseback to play for the Star of Delegate Order of Oddfellows. The first Orbost Brass Band was formed in 1889. Around 1908 the town band split and the Orbost Workers' Band was formed. Eventually the two bands merged in 1913 to reform as the Orbost Municipal Band under conductorship of Charles Spink. The band continued for many years but was later disbanded and again reformed. This was to happen a number of times, the last time being in 1961 and continuing through to the late 1970's. Ivan Spargo was a builder in Melbourne. In 1965 he and his wife Joy leased piece of land in Falls Creek and built Spargo Lodge. It was a dormitory style chalet designed to accommodate large groups and families. Their son, Rob and his wife Blanche purchased the site where the Falls Creek Hotel is today. In 1970 Rob’s sister Leonie and her husband Glenn joined the business, and they started operating in 1972. The family has been actively involved in the Falls Creek Community including the establishment of the Falls Creek Primary School and Falls Creek Search & Rescue. Rob also served as a member the Chamber and Resort Management Board. As the next generation stepped into the family business, Rob and Blanche retired to their home in Tawonga South in 2014 and Leonie and Glenn retired to Melbourne in 2017.This brochure is significant because it is linked to a prominent business and family in Falls Creek, Victoria. A lodge was often erected at the entrance of a large estate to direct guests to the mansion or reject unauthorised people from entering the property. The presence for a Gatehouse or Lodge erected at the entrance of a larger property was a tradition copied by wealthy landowners in the Colony from one practised by the upper classes in Britain. This photograph was taken circa 1981 - 1982 by Tourism Victoria. Orest “Ory” Frueauf was born in Kharkov, Russia in 1925 and moved to Germany with his family to escape persecution. He was conscripted to the German Army during the Second World War. He was a POW until 1948. He was recruited by a French construction company to work as and interpreter on a hydroelectricity project in Tasmania. Ory then moved to work on the Snowy Mountain Scheme including driving a truck to fill the wall of the Rocky Valley dam. In 1952 Ory was recruited by the Albury Ski Club as its lodge supervisor. That year he also entered into a business partnership with Cecil Dobson, running the general store “Whitehaven” and Post Office at Falls Creek. They extended their business by adding accommodation turning Whitehaven into one of the best commercial lodges at Falls Creek. Ory and Cecil dissolved their business partnership in 1963 and Ory went on to build a new lodge called “Snowhaven” at the site of the present day Frueauf Village, Falls Creek. The trail known as Ory's Trail is also named in his honour. Ory retired to Tawonga, Victoria in 1992 and passed away in 1999.This image is significant because it portrays a pioneer of Falls Creek.A4 size black and white photograph of Ory Frueauf standing at the bar at Snowhaven Lodge with Vovka-Finlandia VodkaOn back of photograph: Orest Freauf 1925-1997. 1925 - Born in Kharkov, Russia, 1951 Tasmania Hydro Electric Co; 1954 Howman's Gap, Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme; 1955 Falls Creek Trading and Transport Co; 1957 Winterhaven Ski Lodge; 1963 Snowhaven Ski Lodge; 1992 Tawonga Southory freauf, hydro electric, tourism victoria, winterhaven ski lodge, snowhaven ski lodge, snow, orest frueauf -
