The photographs are representative of the tourist attractions of the area – Hopkins Falls, the mouth of the Hopkins River, Shelly Beach, the Breakwater, the Botanical Gardens etc. Tourism in Warrnambool began to be important towards the end of the 19th century when the coastal scenery, the beaches and the Sea Water Baths were advertised to promote Warrnambool as a spa resort town. Today tourism is a major industry in the city. This item is of minor interest as a souvenir of the type of postcard purchased by tourists in the mid 20th century. This is a piece of blue paper folded in two with black and blue printing on the front and back covers and an image of two kookaburras on the front cover. In the back of the front cover is pasted a strip of paper containing 13 black and white photographs folded in concertina fashion to form a booklet. Booklet, Warrnambool On the Sea, 1940
... information on the tourist attractions of Warrnambool and district... information on the tourist attractions of Warrnambool and district ...This booklet has been issued in 1940 by the Warrnambool Progress and Tourist Association established in 1927. Warrnambool was the winner of the Sun News Pictorial Quest in 1928, the ‘Ideal City’ and used this title to promote the city. There had been several Tourist Associations in Warrnambool prior to 1927 and all of them promoted Warrnambool as a health resort and an ideal holiday destination with the Sea Baths in Gilles Street and the beach close by. This guide has been produced during World War Two with rationing of petrol and other goods and most people in Victoria would not have been contemplating long and expensive holidays so Warrnambool with its rail service and beach facilities would have been seen as a possible holiday destination. This Warrnambool Tourist Guide is of considerable interest both for its content regarding Warrnambool’s attractions in World War Two and for its 1940s advertisements and photographs. This is a booklet of 33 pages stapled together. It is a Warrnambool Tourist Guide from the 1940s. The pages are mostly white but there are a couple of blue and buff-coloured pages. The cover is pink with mauve and black printed material and a photograph on the front cover of the Warrnambool camping ground on the foreshore. The back cover has become detached. The booklet contains information on the tourist attractions of Warrnambool and district, black and white photographs of buildings, events and scenic spots and advertisements for local businesses. Many of the advertisements also contain photographs of business premises. Front Cover: ‘The Ideal City, Warrnambool On The Sea, , Victoria, Australia, Camping Grounds at the Beach, Tourist Guide – Where to Go! What to See! It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished. This photograph shows the tea tables at 'Shiloah' where Selina Jeeves and her daughter Elsie served afternoon tea to visitors.Black and white photograph taken from a Rose Series postcard showing tables set up in an exterior courtyard with bench seating. On front - Rose Series P. 170 A SHADY BOWER "SHILOAH" MT DANDENONG. ... tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road... setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making ...'Shiloah' was the home of Isaac Jeeves the younger - son of Isaac Jeeves the Valley Pioneer and brother of Ellis Jeeves. Isaac built this house himself using local timber he cut and split. It was ready for his marriage to Selina Leach of Bayswater in 1886. ‘Shiloah' was enlarged to take guests in the early 1900s. It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished.Black and white photograph of wooden structure with two wings and a central verandah. ... become an important tourist attraction in the area. Most... become an important tourist attraction in the area. Most ...This videotape has material related to the annual arrival in Warrnambool’s coast (mainly at Logan’s Beach) of Southern Right Whales. These whales come annually to the Western District coastline about May and stay until about October. and some calve at Logan’s Beach – hence the name Logan’s Beach Whale Nursery. The whales have become an important tourist attraction in the area. Most of the whales return to the area regularly and have been named from their particular markings. Wilma the whale was a great favourite and was seen about every three years in Warrnambool but is now appearing in other parts of Australia. The tape is dedicated to Robert Ulmann who was a well-known artist and conservationist in the Warrnambool region. He did much to ensure the whales received protection and publicity in the Warrnambool environment. This tape is now in an outdated format and will be transferred to a more appropriate form as the material in it needs to be preserved. The whale migration to Warrnambool is a significant natural history event and material from the 1990s is important. This is a videotape in a black case with a white label with black printing pasted on. The outer box is white with a white label with blue and black printing. An image of a whale is on the outer label. ‘Warrnambool’s Winter Visitors’ ‘Update 98 Wilma Returns 7thJune 1999’ ‘This video dedicated to the memory of Robert Ulmann’ ‘Canya Dantz perform the song, Warrnambool Whale Wash’ whales in warrnambool, robert ulmann
