The cerificate was given to nurses when they graduated from nurse training. This certificate is one of few at Alfred Hospital Nursing Archives. Maria Birrell one of the first graduates in 1882

Significance

The first nurse graduation certificate was given to Alfred Nurses in 1882. The School of nursing commenced at Alfred Hospital in 1880. It is the first general nurse training school in Victoria.

Physical description

Nurse Graduation Certificate 1888, Alfred Hospital. Hard cover, brown leather with gold lettering title and decorative border on the front cover. When folded open there is a print of Alfred Hospital on the upper half and a certificate on the lower half.

Inscriptions & markings

The cover has gold lettering, NURSES' CERTIFICATE ALFRED HOSPITAL and a gold decorative border. Inside is a print of Alfred Hospital circa 1871 and the black ink cerificate signed by the President , two examiners and the nurse 31st July 1888
