Historical information

Harry Derrick, a native of Tallangatta Valley NE Victoria, served with the 37th Australian Infantry Battalion, 10th Brigade, 3rd Division AIF. His regimental number was 854. He was wounded in action on three occasions. On the third occasion he was taken prisoner near the village of Clery on 30 August 1918. He died in a German military hospital on 12 November 1918, the day after the Armistice. Medalions of this type were issued to the next-of-kin of all soldiers who died during the war.

Significance

This medallion, coupled with the diary held in the collection, has added significance to North East Victoria and particularly the small township of Tallangatta.

Circular medallion 120mm dia x 4mm thick, bronze.

Inscriptions & markings

Figure of Britannia holding laurel wreath and standing with lion. Embossed around medallion the words "He died for freedom and honour". The name Harry Nutman Derrick enclosed in rectangular outline.
