ThIs photograph shows a barge loaded with bales of wool. The photograph also shows the crane used to load the barge. An unknown paddle steamer is moored next to the barge.

Significance

This photograph shows the size and weight of a load of wool being brought down the Darling River to the Echuca Wharf to be sent to Melbourne by train for sale. It also shows the triangular crane system used to load the bales from the bank onto the barge. Some paddle steamers were able to tow two or three of these loaded barges at the same time to save towing expenses.
