Historical information

Driver William A Howse was an 18 year-old shop assistant serving with the 17th Battery Australian Field Artillery, Albury’s militia battery, when he volunteered for the AIF in 1915 with 150 other members and ex-members of the battery. He served as a Driver in the 13th Battery (Albury Battery) 5th Field Artillery Brigade throughout the war.

Significance

Representative of the type of souvenirs taken by Australian soldiers during WWI and brought back to Australia as a keepsake. Manuscript note by soldier makes it unique.

Physical description

Grey felt shoulder strap with white edging and number 25 embroided on, glued to piece of brown paper with handwritten inscription " Souvenired by Driver W. House, 13th Battery ( Albury Battery). Strap is that of the 25th Bavarian Regiment.

Inscriptions & markings

" Armstrap of German captured at the start of the Great Advance, Villers Brettoneaux, France, August 8th 1918. Just breaking day, my [last souvenir] of the war."
