This item is part of the Mary Gaunt display in the Art Room of the Chiltern Athenaeum Museum. Mary Gaunt, author, was the eldest daughter of W.H.Gaunt. William Gaunt was a highly successful public service member who rose through the ranks to become a police magistrate at Beechworth in 1857, then Commissioner of Crown Lands at Chiltern in 1859, hence the significance of this item. He became a coroner of Victoria at Indigo in 1860, before moving to Sandhurst sometime after 1865. He remained in the Ballarat district for the rest of his life. For many years he studied law and was called to the bar in 1873. He was held in very high regard and a street in Chiltern is named after him.
