          This is a photo of The Nook in Sunbury. It is on a wide and deep bend in Jacksons Creek and before the Aquatic Centre was built in Sunbury it served as the town's swimming pool for many years. The house on the RHS was situated near Powlett Street.

          Frank Millett and his nephew Hopper Cahill are the two people standing by the building after spending the day shooting rabbits in 1922. They are standing in front of the Aitkens Gap Police Barracks. In the 1860s the gaol and stables were sold to George Millett and added to the Millett property. The Barracks and the new farm homestead were built by Mick Morrison. The Bald Hill Hotel at Aitkens Gap on the Bendigo Road (Calder Highway) was guilt by George Millett in 1854 and functioned until the gold began to run out after the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s. The Millett family continued to farm until 1967. The family also and operated hotels in the local area.

          The five men who were staff officers of the Victorian Volunteer Force were Captain Snee, Major Pitt, Colonel Anderson, Captain Payne and Captain Burton. The Victorian Volunteer Force was the main defence force in Victoria after the withdrawal the Imperial Troops in 1870. IN that same year a Permanent Artillery Corps ( Victorian Artillery) was also formed. The Volunteer force was disbanded in 1884 and replaced by the Victorian Militia force. The members were paid and enrolled for a set term.

          The train smash occurred in Sunbury between the Station Street level rail crossing and Sunbury Station in June 1952. The Jubilee train that was used in 1951 to celebrate 125 of European settlement in Victoria, ran into the bank of a goods train on the rail line. The guard in the goods train was killed. This smash was one of a number that have happened in Sunbury. The tree lined street in the background is Horne Street.

          The property is Craiglee, which was one of the first vineyards established in Sunbury in 1865 by Stuart Johnson. It is sited on the east bank of Jackson Creek and fronts onto Macedon Street. Goonawarra is another early vineyard on the opposite side of Macedon Street.

          The class photograph was taken at the Bulla State School No. 46 in 1930. Two children have been identified. They are John Daniel, seated in the front row, second from the left. Vincent Daniel is standing, first on the left in the back row. The Daniel family were store holders in the Bulla township. Over the years a teacher's residence and another larger weatherboard classroom were added to the original bluestone building. The school functioned for over 100 years from the late 1870s until 2005 when it was closed and is now a private house.

          The Bulla State School was one of the oldest schools in the district and served the children from surrounding areas.

          This is an image of the original single storey Royal Hotel building which was on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets. In the 1930s the single storey structure was demolished after a fire and replaced with a double storey Art Deco red brick building, which still stands on the same site.

          At one stage there were four hotels in Evans Street between Station Street and Brook Street. At some stage the Millett family owned them. The Royal and the Olive Tree (formerly the Railway) hotels remain on their original site but not in their original appearance.

          Domestic object - Electric Iron

          This electric iron was manufactured by Hecla, Australia and possibly manufactured in the 1940's-1950's. The iron was used mainly by housewives to iron items of clothing and various items of linen used in the home. Some items were sprinkled with water to make them damp and therefore help to make the ironing easier. Later steam irons were produced.

          Plaque - Shire of Bulla Plaque

          This round Shire of Bulla plaque would have been attached possibly to a lectern by three screws as per the back of the the plaque. Shire of Bulla amalgamated to become part of the City of Hume in 1994. Various council areas in Victoria amalgamated in the early 1990's.

          Uniform - Army Helmet

          This green bowl shaped steel helmet has a two piece liner and pad attached to the helmet by a single rivet. It has a canvas chin strap attached to the sides and a green cotton mesh attached to the helmet by a drawstring. These helmets were issued to troops during World War 1.

          This heavy seaal press would have been used to emboss impressions of the Shire of Bulla seal onto documents. This seal impressed "The Mayor, Councillors And Citiizens of the Shire of Bulla" and was used between 1989-1994. Various Councils within Victoria amalgamated in the early 1990's with the Shire of Bulla becoming part of the City of Hume.

          The Boardman family were local business people in Sunbury, who were storekeepers and also produced the local newspaper. Their original building was in Brook Street near the railway station but they later located their business further down in Brook Street on the corner of O'Shanassy Street.

          J.S Boardman was a local businessman who ran and produced the local newspaper until it closed down in the 1960s. The Boardman store and newspaper office was originally sited in Brook Street near the railway station but it was later relocated to a site on the SW corner of Brook and O'Shanassy Street.

          The photograph was taken from the rear of the Emu Bottom Homestead and its outbuildings in front of the home paddock. George Evans, one of the district's earliest European settlers built the original homestead from Silurian sandstone removed from the surrounding hillsides in the 1830s.

          The photograph was taken from the rear of the Emu Bottom Homestead and its outbuildings. George Evans, one of the earliest European settlers in Sunbury, built Emu Bottom homestead in the 1830s. The original building was made from Silurian sandstone cut from the surrounding hills.

          Education kit - Cuisenaire set

          Cuisenaire rods are mathematical aids introduced into Victorian schools in the mid 1960s. They aimed to give students different ways to explore mathematics and learn the basic concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions and decimals.

          Accessory - School bag, c1930s

          Children used bags like this one to carry their books and writing materials to and from School. As they advanced through the school their bags increased in size and weight.

          A small leather school bag with the provision for two buckles in the front. The original strap has been removed and replaced with one strap which has been fixed to the flap across the top of the bag.

          Tool - Steel pen

          The plain pen with the removable steel nib was used by primary school children from the inception of compulsory school education in 1872 to the 1960s. In the upper levels of the school, pupils were allowed to use fountain pens before biros came into common use.

          Children used HB lead pencils in class after graduating from either writing on blackboards or slates and before they reached the middle primary school classes where they used pen and ink.
