Historical information

James Semmens was born in Cornwell in c.1861 and died in Elwood in 1923. He married Elizabeth Ann Marks c 1881and first entered council in 1904. He was elected on the 24th August 1906 and served for one year, remaining a Councillor for the Barkly Ward until August 1913. During his time in office Mayor Semmens forgo the customary Mayoral Ball and instead gave money to help relieve poverty in the city.
