Tatura Irrigation & Wartime Camps Museum Tatura, VIC

Tatura Museum houses a unique collection based on 3 main themes which are: the History of Irrigation in Victoria's Goulburn Valley, the Local and Family History of Tatura and District since white settlement and the history of the seven World War 2 Prisoner of War and Internment Camps and the Garrison and Hospital which were established in this area.
Tatura Museum is not the average small town museum. Our collection includes ONLY items which have a connection to Tatura.
Whether it is Local, Family, Irrigation or War Time Camps history every article on display has a direct connection with Tatura and is not just part of a general historical display.
The collection and our reference library are a valuable source of research material for academics, school children, relatives and former residents.

Photographs, art and craft work, records, recollections and other archival material recovered from the former Prisoners of War and Internees in the Tatura Area during WW2, many of whom remained in Australia after their release.
These include the collection of 54 works of Leonhard Adam completed over a 50 year period and donated by his daughter Mary-Clare Murvitz of Israel and a collection of war time sketches by Georg Rosenkranz.
We have many artefacts and documents relating to the HSK Kormoran and HMAS Sydney as the Kormoran survivors were prisoners of war in Tatura.
Books, records, maps, photographs and information on the history of Irrigation in Victoria's Goulburn Valley.
Books, photographs, memorabilia, maps and recollections regarding the Local History of Tatura and District including major industries and local families.

Significance

Much of the collection has originated from activities of prisoners from within the camps, and so it is unique and irreplaceable. Many of the internees brought to these camps from overseas countries were intellectuals, academically well qualified in their professions and some were gifted sports persons or in their trade. Many of these people chose to remain in Australia and have added immensely to the education and culture of this country. Their stories, most involving escape from Nazism, are inspirational.

The story of the development of Irrigation in the Western Goulburn Valley is the story of the first irrigation scheme in Victoria, and lead to the creation of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, and its involvement in Irrigation.

I have the same threepence coin. It has a swastika punched into it and also REGD787 stamped on the back. In my research, I haven't found any information about it. If anyone can help with this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Small brown leather suit case. Metal clasps, plastic handle, reinforced corners and joins.

Historical information

Used as school case, then container for keeping Methodist and Uniting Churches treasurers correspondence and records. These include Montogomery (builder) tender for new Methodist Church, Tatura late 1950's.

Made at Shepparton High School in 1965. Found in Jim Stewart's shed, Tatura.

Historical information

Nails removed from roof timbers of Museum during renovation in 2008. Building dated from approx 1880. Good example of early building material. Holding case made by Museum member Bill Doller.

Rectifier

An electrical devise which changes AC power supply to DC supply.

Historical information

This object was installed at the Victory Hall, Tatura, to change main power (AC 240 v), to DC (direct current 30 volts). This supply was required to run the hall's picture show.

Ink Stand

Wooden stand, grooves for pens. Metal pen holder along back. Two glass ink wells with lids. On 4 legs.

Historical information

Used in private home of Mr George Sayers, Tatura. Donated by local Anglican Priest. Unknown how he got it.

Pencils

6 black lead pencils with rubber on end, with business house names on. Used as give away for advertising. Some unused. 3 as new unsharpened, 1 sharpened slightly used; 1 with rubber end used; 1 with rubber unsharpened.

Historical information

Pencils handed in from 3 business houses who had them endorsed with their name, type of business and phone number for advertising purposes - garage, pharmacy and draper.

Spinning loom

8 spinning looms, wooden.Long with metal caps on ends (like tyres). Appear like heavy duty cotton reels

Historical information

Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, set up a spinning mill in Tatura in 1958 (Shepparton 1949) for approx. 30 years. When closing down some items were given away. These were given to Mr and Mrs A. Knee. The mill employed many locals.

Kitchen scales - Crane Foundry Co.

Kitchen scales with imperial weights. 2 lb, 1 lb, and 1/2 lb. Large dish.

Historical information

Made in England, exported to Australia. Used in early Victorian kitchens. Pre decimal.

Seed Broadcaster

Canvas bag with shoulder strap attached to hand driven broadcaster. Wheel with handle when turned drives cogs attached by axle to spindle with blades to propel seed.

Historical information

Used by local farmer, Tatura district, for 3 generations to broadcast small areas or missed areas or seed (cereals, clover pasture, lucerne).

CORNISH

Bag Filler Rammer

Tatura Irrigation & Wartime Camps Museum, Tatura

Handmade galvanised iron (tin) pipe with funnel at top with lid used to ram extra grain into filled bags to top up weight.

Historical information

Used on Crawford's farm (Woodlands) to top up bags of cereal when harvested before sewing the bags up. Ramming the pipe into the bag forces extra grain down into the lower areas.

Fence Droppers

Tatura Irrigation & Wartime Camps Museum, Tatura

3 wooden dropper split with axe to shape rather than sawn. 6 holes for wire to pass through (6 gauge). Used between posts to support wires. Made from straight grained timber, grey box.

Historical information

Split timber fence droppers were used with the earliest wire fences especially with closer settlement areas like Tatura. The donors family were Tatura hardware and timber merchants so may have made and supplied these to farmers.

Water bottle (WW1)

metal drink container with bakelite lid. Thick material cover held in place with press studs. Wire clips to attach unit to uniform. Approx 1 litre capacity.

Historical information

Issued to and used by James Rose during WW1. He served in 8th field Ambulance Co 1915 - 18 with Fredrick Webb.

Issued by the Army during WW2 and used by Ron Rose during his service in 8th Field Ambulance Co.

Gas Mask - WW1

WW1 gas mask. Face mask tube connected to metal container.All contained inside canvas haversack. Cellophane.

Historical information

Issued to Australian servicemen during WW1 when poison gas was used in warfare in Europe. Object used in WW1 by Ron Rose's father, James Rose. He served in the 8th field ambulance co, 1915 - 1918.

Safe - Coolgardie

Frame with hessian attached on all sides. Galvanized iron tray on top holding water which is siphoned down to keep hessian wet. Breeze passing through wet hessian cools contents on shelves inside.

Historical information

Coolgardie safes were first used on Western Australian gold fields, approx 1890's. Soon became universally used in Australia until ice chests took over about 1940. Some stood 2 meter high by 1 meter square.

Typewriter - manual

Manual typewriter with 2' 6" carriage used for office work. Pre decimal money keys.

Historical information

Housed and used at the Shire of Rodney office in Tatura. Closed 1994 following shire amalgamation.

Sewing Machine

Vintage treadle type sewing machine includes drawers across front. Folds down to create small table.

Used by grandmother (Mrs Medbury) and mother(Mrs Jerrett) of former local resident (Grace Jerrett).

Von Devonie Bromley was in the AWAS, signaler, driver, in Nhill, Victoria, in WW2. The field telephone (army issued) was used during her war service.

Information relating to Kurt's time as an internee in Camp ?. Letters and cards to and from other ex POW's. Dossier on Kurt. The names of many other POW 's are mentioned. To be translated.

Army Intelligence knew there was a secret radio operating in Tatura No.1 Camp. The inmates were getting the war news direct from Germany. They had to have a strong shortwave receiver, but where was it?

Historical information

Tells the stories of Jewish refugees brought to Australia, particularly those on the Prison Ship "Dunera". Emphasis on musicians.

Significance

Many of the musicians were interned in camps in the Tatura Group of Internment Camps.
