Photograph, Harefield UK, 1993
Photo of an Anzac Day service in at the Australian Military Cemetery in Harefield UK. The local school children march to the cemetery to place wreaths. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. Document, Warrnambool Cemetery Walk 2000, 2000
The Warrnambool Family History Group was established in 1980. It has been running Warrnambool cemetery tours for a great number of years with the late Marie Boyce being a prominent organizer of these tours. The tours are usually held in January and on Anzac Day and over recent years have concentrated on a theme to provide information on a certain group of people (eg Mayors, war heroes). These sheets are a good example of the graves visited during the Warrnambool Cemetery tours and the information given on these people. These are two yellow A4 sheets typed back and front with information on people buries in the Warrnambool Cemetery and a sketch map of the Warrnambool Cemetery. The typed material has been annotated with handwritten notes (blue biro) by a participant on one of the walking tours.Front page: ‘Cemetery Walk, Notes for Walks Held During January 2000. Photograph - Entrance to the Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery, E.J. Dower, 1913
One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office. The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's tram network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Digital copy of an original mounted photograph showing the entrance to the Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery in 1913. The entrance was/is on the corner of High Street and Parkhill Road. The horse drawn tram from Victoria Street Bridge to the Cemetery can be seen to the left of the photo in High Street. Booklet, Thompson & O'Farrell, Rules & Regulations scale of fees Cemetary, 1902 (original edition)
This booklet gives the Rules and Regulations and the Scale of Fees for the Warrnambool General Cemetery as from 1902. The booklet rescinded the Rules and Regulations of 1855 and amongst the 1902 Rules it is noted that no catacombs or wooden structures were allowed by the Trustees. It was also noted that no child under ten was permitted into the cemetery grounds unless under adult supervision. The charge for an adult burial was £1 and ten shillings for a child under ten. The Warrnambool Cemetery is in Otway Road, Warrnambool and was first gazetted in 1853 with Mr Whittet as the first Sexton. This booklet is of considerable interest because it gives the Rules and Regulations and the Scale of Charges of the Warrnambool General Cemetery as laid down in 1902. The Trustees at the time were William Ardlie, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Samuel Nettleton, a well-known Warrnambool shopkeeper and J.H.Allan, a member of a pioneering family in the Warrnambool district. This is a small booklet containing the Rules and Regulations of the Warrnambool General Cemetery. It contains four double-sided pages with printed material on all of the pages. The cover is pale yellow and the printing on the front cover has a black edging. There is some silverfish damage on the page edges. The pages were stapled together but the staples have been removed (the use of staples suggests that this booklet is perhaps a reprint at a later date)Front Cover: ‘Rules and Regulations and Scale of Fees of the Warrnambool General Cemetery, Gazetted 19th November 1902, Warrnambool, Thompson and O’Farrell, Printers, Koroit St. 1902’.warrnambool general cemetery -
