Work on paper - ink and watercolour, Annette Meikle, Moysey Memorial, 1977
In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. Erected in 1964, this stone cairn on Beach Road in Beaumaris marks the site of the wattle and daub cottage of James and Susannah Moysey. James, Susannah and their cousin Nicholas arrived in Victoria in 1844 and leased land on the cliff-top. They built a cottage, cleared the land for sheep and cattle and established vegetable gardens. They later purchased the land and named it Beaumaris Park, derived from the name of the Welsh coastal resort where Edward I built Beau Marais castle.Annette Meikle, Moysey Memorial 1977, ink and watercolour, 35 x 23.5 cm. Work on paper, Roger Edwards, On the Ash Bed, 2020
The irresistible appeal of our unique Terrestrial orchids will often find native plant enthusiasts down on hands and knees following a hot summer bushfire surveying the forest floor where flowering colonies may emerge stimulated by the ‘Ash Bed’ effect and the symbiotic relationship with a particular soil Hyphae. Many like the small Hare orchid and Red Beaks depicted in this work may not be seen flowering again on the site until the next fire event. This work is one of a number painted by the artist after bushfires in the Grampians. Roger Edwards was a Forest Officer, posted to Cavendish, in SW corner of the Grampians, in 1975. He retired in 2018, enabling him to devote more time to his art.Environment, Wildflowers, Landscape, Botanic artGift of Rob Youl to commemorate artist, Betty Conabere. This painting shows orchids and other native plants regrowing densely in an ashbed after a Grampians bushfire. Decorative object - Gold toned clip-on earrings with faux pearls from the Sarah Coventry jewellery range, c. 1970s - 1980s
Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd. later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, the earrings have local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. The direct selling party-plan business model Sarah Coventry was based on is also considered the first of its kind for jewellery. Two gold toned metal earrings with each earring consisting of a faux pearl and two leaf-shaped elements and the Sarah Coventry marks on the back of the clip."©SARAH COV / CANADA" on the back of one earring and "CANADA / ©SARAH COV" on the other. ©SARAH COV is thought to be first used in 1953.sarah coventry, jewellery, wodonga, costume jewellery, vintage fashion jewellery, earrings, gold earrings, faux pearls -
