Work on paper - Charcoal and pages from Aboriginal Words and Place Names, Jenna Lee, Without us, 2022
Jenna Lee dissects and reconstructs colonial 'Indigenous dictionaries' and embeds the works with new cultural meaning. Long obsessed with the duality of the destructive and healing properties that fire can yield, this element has been applied to the paper in the forms of burning and mark-making. In Without Us, Lee uses charcoal to conceal the text on the page, viewing this process as a ritualistic act of reclaiming and honouring Indigenous heritage while challenging the oppressive legacies of colonialism. Lee explains in Art Guide (2022), ‘These books in particular [used to create the proposed works] are Aboriginal language dictionaries—but there’s no such thing as “Aboriginal language”. There are hundreds of languages. The dictionary just presents words, with no reference to where they came from. It was specifically published by collating compendiums from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, with the purpose to give [non-Indigenous] people pleasant sounding Aboriginal words to name children, houses and boats. And yet the first things that were taken from us was our language, children, land and water. And the reason our words were so widely written down was because [white Australians] were trying to eradicate us. They thought we were going extinct. The deeper you get into it, the darker it gets. But the purpose of my work is to take those horrible things and cast them as something beautiful.’Framed artwork -

Painting - oil on linen, Rob McHaffie, Why did we go further than monkeys, monkeys know how to be monkeys, 2008
This work was painted following Rob McHaffie’s Australia Council Residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2007. Despite Paris being a beautiful city, McHaffie also found the experience challenging and felt that on a bad day, the city was no more than an ornately decorated concrete jungle. In this painting a monkey looks out from a green building onto an imagined scene abound with art historical references. A classical European figurative sculpture is surrounded by flowers from Monet’s gardens, while a contemporary sculpture by Franz West dominates the foreground of the work. McHaffie questions the so-called evolution of cultured humanity in comparison to the imagined contentedness of our pre-evolved species.oil on linenmonkey, sculpture, painting, rob mchaffie, paris, flowers, franz west -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Painting, George Frederick Gregory (1821-1887), P&O S.S. Bangalore, 1867 - 1886
This ship was number 1 of 2 ships named Bangalore and run by P & O. This ship has listed the same tonnage as that on the inscription on the frame of this work. The ship was subsequently sold in 1886 sold to Hajee Cassum Joosub and used for passengers on pilgrimage into Jeddah. Another view of the history of the Bangalore is that to be found at the Maritime Museums of Sydney listing of another painting of the Bangalore which provides a somewhat different history. It is possible that the story of Bangalore 1 and Bangalore 2 have become conflated further research is needed to verify. see Links field. SS BANGALORE was built in 1867 by William Denny of Dumbarton. Owned by P&O, SS BANGALORE operated from Bombay and Galle to Melbourne and Sydney from 1872 to 1886 as a passenger and mail ship. In 1891 BANGALORE was sold to Wilh. Wilhelmsen, Norway and renamed SS CORINGA. The painting was exhibited during the Centenary Maritime Exhibition on the Shandon (lot 262, p43) but doesn't mention the owner.Marine art, Maritime artThinly painted image on board featuring centrally a moored, at anchor, 19th C dual masted steamship with black funnel and flying at the stern a red ensign. To either side are conventional rigged clippers or sailing ships. Near the bow of the steamship there seems to be a tug or paddle steamer face on. In the foreground is a small rowing boat with boatman and two passengers, a male and a female. The painting on board is mounted in a large polished or varnished cedarwood frame with edge carving and a decorative pitted slip which holds in place a thin piece of glazing. Backing paper and seal has all been removed except for hanging wire. Central at front lower edge of frame is a small chipped wood plaque with inscription.Painted in black on plaque and coloured black: "P & O S.S. Work on paper - Photocopy of newspaper cutting, Herald and Weekly times, "MIRANDA TELLS OF A HOLIDAY ON/ PHILLIP ISLAND"
Miranda was a very popular journalist of this era, whose homely style appealed to many readers, especially women, her main audience in her writing. Here she talks about renting a new demonstration holiday home (probably a Coldon Home), which, although small, had a 'dream kitchen'. She describes the birds and walk through the wattle to the beach, but also the many blocks for sale and wonders what the island will be like in 10 years time from their visit. Her son drove them to Pyramid Rock where they almost got bogged on the road. They visit the usual spots, which she describes with a combination of curiosity and enjoyment. She also mentions another block fenced off on the main road which was a gift from the ratepayers of Phillip Island, and which the Young Farmers were to plant out for koala trees. This article is significant because thousands of Weekly Times newspaper readers read Miranda’s letter article without fail each edition. She describes renting a house for a holiday, which indicates the move away from family holidays in guest houses. She also describes some of the rough roads in parts of the island at the time. She concentrates on the island’s natural attractions rather than man- made tourist attractions, which is also significant in letting us see why people would visit Phillip Island in that era. Miranda also predicts the explosion of the holiday home owner market which took place soon after, and continues today though in a more controlled way.Photocopy of newspaper article cut out from full page. "Birthing Trees is culturally significant to Aboriginal people. Women would give birth in the hollowed out trees. Men were not allowed there as this was women's business. This 800 year old tree and other ancient trees are in the way of a proposed new western district highway. Let's find a way to respect cultural diversity as we all share this one land". >Purchased & acquired for the City of Whittlesea Cultural Collection in 2018.
