'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.' Melbourne Legacy
Drawing, Card players drawn by Pat Hanna, 1955
A cartoon drawing done by artist Pat Hanna and sent to friends at Legacy. It looks like a funny caption is missing from the drawing. It was stored with other items including a letter to Frank (possibly L/- Frank Doolan who was making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project - see items 01400 to 01404). Pat Hanna was an entertainer, comedian, artist and producer of reveues, plays and movies. One of his first revues was performed in France just after the armistice. A popular stage show was 'Diggers' that performed around Australia post-war and adapted into a film in 1931. He was asked to pose for photographer Jack Cato for the iconic image of a digger shown in 01400. He was born George Patrick Hanna, 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand and served in the First World War, was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and was involved with Legacy for many years.Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy and an artist and producer. Work on paper - Robert Williams Blue Gum ?, Dedication Plaques in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, 7-9 January 1991
Director of Gardens M/s Claire Nailer nee Williams is asking for information about a Blue Gum dedicated to her Great Grandfather, Robert Williams. She is also asking whether a new plaque could be made also including her grandfather and father. This correspondence refers to the history of the Blue Gums in the Ballarat Botanic Gardens, the issue of dedication plaques missing and the lack of funds for replacements. Insight is also given into Philip Clingin's assiduous work. pp.1,3 & 4 are printed on City of Ballarat notepaper with City Logos and address in blue. p2 is a photocopied letter written in longhand. There is a note in longhand stapled to the right top corner of p.1.john garner, john garner collection, doctor, ballarat botanical gardens, curator, philip clingin, claire nailer nee williams, robert williams, major-general robert earnest williams, friends of ballarat botanical gardens, blue gums, williams family papers, weston bate, dedication plaques, director of gardens and parks, roy mosman, 1991, eucalyptus globulus, gardens, ballarat -

Work on paper - Bookplate, John Shirlow, "Ex Libris R.H. Croll Solvitur Ambulando" by John Shirlow
John Shirlow (1869-1936) John Shirlow was the first Australian to make etching the basis of his career. Schooled in Melbourne, he studied for a time with Artur Loureiro and attended design classes at the National Gallery School from 1890 to 1895. Specialising in renderings of old Melbourne buildings, which are now of great historical interest, he drew directly onto the plate in reverse. In 1929 he founded etching classes at the Working Men's Institute. Throughout his life a prominent figure on the Victorian art scene, he was involved in various choirs and bushwalked with R.H. Croll and C.J. Dennis. He was a Trustee of the National Gallery of Victoria from 1922 to 1936. (http://www.portrait.gov.au/people/john-shirlow-1869)Bookplate "Ex Libris R.H. Work on paper - Bookplate, Ex Libris Tereshchenkov Nikita
After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society. The society was instrumental in promoting the art of the bookplate through establishment of the Australian Bookplate Design competition. The competition includes a design award for secondary schools students.Jigsaw of personality images flanked by an angel and a devil with a bearded psychologist seated upper right.6/25 L-1 "Psychology" I Kozub 2020irena kozub, nikita tereshchenkov, australian bookplate design awards 2021 -

Work on paper - Methodist Order of Knights, Page's Degree symbol
The number seven enclosed in an equilateral triangle was the General Mark of the Order. The number seven is the perfect number used in scripture. The Methodist Order of Knights was the official youth organisation of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It originated in Hurstville, NSW, on the 4th October 1914 by the then Mr and later Rev Alex Bray. Alex Bray was a Sunday School teacher and spoke to his class of the Knights of the Round Table. In 1917 the Order of Knights was officially recognised by the Sunday School Dept of the NSW Methodist Conference. Courts spread thoroughout Australia. In 1927 the High Court of NSW called for designs for a badge and in 1929 the General Conference of the Methodist Church of Australasia recognised the Order as an approved Organisation. In 1938 the Senior Section was organised into Degrees of Sincerity, Service and Sacrifice; the Junior Section into Pages' Degree with advancement to Esquire. In 1954 the Junior Section was reorganised into two groups: Pages 8 to 11 years and Esquires 12 to 15 years.
