Melbourne Legacy
Newspaper - Article, A touch of class, 1977
An article about Ivanhoe Grammar School students who were involved in the school's 'activities week' where the student undertook community service. Legacy found six houses in need of painting and 66 boys were given the task. The Legacy widow, Mrs Drowley of Fairfield appreciated their work and provided tea and scones. Otherwise it was at no cost to her. Pictured were Neil Gaule, Matt Campbell, Con Markidis, Neil Jordan, Peter Augustes and Bruce Permezel. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. Not all pages have been listed individually but some are listed from 02164 to 02176.A record of the types of services that Legacy helped arrange for the widows and which were published in the press in 1977.Newspaper article in the 'Heidelberger' newspaper about boys painting a Legacy widow's house in 1977 pasted to brown page of a scrapbook.Stamped '24 Aug 1977' in purple ink.widows, painters, ivanhoe grammar -

Book, Robertson, Craig, Buckley's Hope : the real life story of Australia's Robinson Crusoe, 1981
Blurb: On Boxing Day 1803 a young English convict named William Buckley escaped from Victoria's abortive first settlement, at Sorrento. For the next thirty-two years Buckley survived in the wild, mainly because he was adopted and helped by the local tribes. In 1835 Buckley rejoined the civilization he had cast aside, emerging to meet Melbourne's founders. He became an important guide and interpreter in the crucial first years of the European conquest of the Port Phillip region. Then, as the Aborigines were engulfed by the flood of white men, Buckley found himself in no-man's land, mistrusted by his former black friends and by the white society who so misunderstood them. He was reviled, so harshly that his reputation has suffered to this day. This is William Buckley's story. It is a story based on fact, about a real Robinson Crusoe who was unique in Australia's history. And it is also a story of European intruders imposing their savage will on an alien, ancient continent. Rarely has Australian history come more alive than in the pages of this remarkable first novel. Buckley's life with the Aboriginal people of Port Phillip between 1803 and 1835; subsequent life in white community ; includes glossary of Aboriginal words (p. 271-280).288 p. : 3 maps ; 22 cm.Blurb: On Boxing Day 1803 a young English convict named William Buckley escaped from Victoria's abortive first settlement, at Sorrento. For the next thirty-two years Buckley survived in the wild, mainly because he was adopted and helped by the local tribes. In 1835 Buckley rejoined the civilization he had cast aside, emerging to meet Melbourne's founders. On 7 March 1944 Tokyo announced that the Japanese invasion of British India had begun. By mid-month, the Japanese 31st Division had crossed the Chindwin River in northern Burma, advancing on a wide front towards Imphal and Kohima. In bitter jungle fighting from early April, the British Fourteenth Army under Field Marshal Slim held the Japanese assault on Kohima Ridge. By late June the Japanese were in headlong retreat. Kohima ranks for strategic importance with Alamein, Midway and Stalingrad. The increasing dominance of Allied airpower in the region in the aftermath of the battle was a major factor.Index, bibliography, ill, maps, p.275.non-fictionOn 7 March 1944 Tokyo announced that the Japanese invasion of British India had begun. Book - Nott Street School. Teachers and staff who served in WW1, Education Dept. Record of War Service 1914-18, 1917 - 1920
These papers were originally in a hidden compartment of the large timber Nott Street School Honour Board, now in the foyer of Port Melbourne Town Hall. This Board was originally located in the Infant School building. During the 1970s, Cr. Perce WHITE had been Chairman of the School Committee and had been aware of the "secret" compartment and its contents. In the early 1990s, Perce obtained the support of Port Melbourne City Council in recognising the necessity of ensuring that the Board and it's contents were protected for posterity. Accordingly, when the school closed in 1993, it was arranged with the Education Department for it to be relocated to the Port Melbourne Town Hall.
