The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Melbourne Legacy
Programme, Programme of the Welcome to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, 1954
The order of service of the event at the MCG attended by the Queen on 25 February 1954. It was held by the ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen of Victoria and the War Bereaved. Legacy played a part. A Legacy ward presented the Queen with a bouquet of flowers and the junior legatees performed for her by forming the letters 'E.R.' on the ground. This was organised by the instructors of the girls and boys classes including Miss Enez Domec Carre. It was the official commemorative document of the occasion. The Queen visited the MCG twice during her visit to Melbourne, once was this exservicemen rally when Legacy children attended, and a second time when it was for all school children. Pathe News footage of the ex-servicemen rally show a two legacy children presenting a posy (see photo above). An article in the Legacy Newsletter in July 1954 featured the event and says Beverley Emsley and Trevor Rees were the children presenting the bouquet and they were accompanied by an escort of: Cam Secombe, Gordon Spong, Dan Craig, Lawrence Challis, Tony Minogue, Elaine Turner, Marie Hunt, Margaret Paltridge, Glennis Foder, and Judith Bishop. The newspaper article for the children's rally said "Legacy wards Brenda Mutimer, 11, of Princes Hill Central school, presented a posy to the Queen and John Barker, 14, of Box Hill High school handed the Duke two Australian animal books for Prince Charles and Princess Anne." A brochure explaining the services provided by the Legacy Employment Service. Also a brochure describing that funds were urgently required to carry on the work of caring for children of Deceased Soldiers. It mentions the number of children on the Clubs record was 2,343 in 1937 (976 girls and 1367 boys). It has a tear off panel that could be returned to Legacy Employment Service with a donation The documents were stored with items from the History archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. These items are usually marked with 'H' and a number.This is one of the first documents that promotes Legacy and summarises its objective and services. This music was used by Frank Wright who had been tutored by Percy Code. Frank Wright won the Australian Open Cornet Championship using this music, and won the gold medal for the highest mark in the British Colonies. Percy Code was born in Melbourne on 03 July 1888. He started learning the violin and piano at the age of eight. Three years later his father, Edward, started tutoring him on the cornet. His first competition was in October 1902 in Ballarat's South Street Competitions. Percy Code was Musical Director of Ballarat City Brass Band from 1913 until 1921. He was Frank Wright's teacher. Code apparently lived in a large house just west of where St Peter's church (Ballarat) now stands. Percy Code toured the world as principal cornet with the 'Besses o' th' Barn Band.' He returned to Australia in 1912. Frank Wright at one stage rode his pushbike from Smeaton to Ballarat for lessons. Leaving Australia for America in March 1921 Percy Code obtained an appointment as trumpet soloist for the 70 piece San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He returned home two years later and became bandmaster to the Prahran City Band in 1925. From 1938, as part of Australia's Sesqui Centenary celebrations, Percy Code conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the ABC orchestral concerts in Sydney Town Hall. His career with the ABC came to an end in late 1951 due to poor health. Percy Code died on 17 October 1953. Princes Court was an amusement park in Melbourne, located on St Kilda Road. Established in 1904, it closed its doors in 1909 after poor ticket sales due to Melbourne's temperamental weather. The park featured a toboggan ride and water chute ride where patrons inside open carriages were plunged down sloping structures from a height at great speeds. The park's other facilities and activities included a rifle range, a tug of war game, a Japanese tea house, a wine bar, a variety show, an open air cinema, and roller skating and bicycle races.This item contributes to our understanding of social life and recreation in early twentieth century Victoria. A souvenir booklet for Princes Court, an amusement park in Melbourne, printed for the years 1904-5.
