The old weatherboard building, possibly dating from the 1860s, comprised a dwelling with a shop in the front room opening off a timber verandah deck which directly fronted the Main Road footpath. At the rear is a brick building of much later date which was for many years used for the bakery. The buildings were demolished for flat construction. The newsletter was published to address the Mercantile Marine primarily officers in the service. This is the number 19. The term "Merchant Navy" was coined in 1919 by King George V. So this foyer predates 1919.An unusual example of newsletter circulated by the Missions to Seamen (UK) during WW1. Local Cemetery Excursion Sunday 27 May 1990 departed Eltham Shire Office at 9.30am and finish mid afternoon. Visits to Eltham , Kangaroo Ground, Queenstown (Smiths Gully), Nillumbik (Diamond Creek), St Katherines (St Helena) Hurst family graves at Hurstbridge and a little known early cemetery at Grteensborough. Attended by 20 members. In each case we were introduced to the cemetery with a brief talk. At Eltham, Frank Burgoyne gave us the benefit of his knowledge as a member of the cemetery trust and at Kangaroo Ground, Bruce Ness spoke in a similar capacity. The lunch stop was at Hurstbridge where we visited the Hurst family graves. The President of Nillumbik Historical Society, Jock Ryan, joined us at the Nillumbik (Diamond Creek) cemetery. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the Ballarat Legacy Family Camp, Widows' Christmas lunch, a long lost dead man's penny being reunited with Legatee Graeme Heywood. Also an article from the archive about Brian Edwards a former JL who flew a tiger moth biplane around Australian for the 70th anniversary of Legacy. Also photos of our programs such as the walking group, the stamp ladies, and widows club gatherings.
