The number one fire brigade was established in May, 1855, with its station in Pall Mall on the present site of the post office. After the tragic Beehive fire of 1871, another two brigades were formed. The tower at the Camp Hill state school was used as a lookout for many years until a reliable phone service was established. The Marong PO opened 1/1/1860 and the area was declared the Marong Road District 19/8/1860. On 12/12/1864 it was redesignated as the Marong Shire and then in 1990 it was proclaimed a rural city. The Sutton Grange PO opened 1/8/1865 and closed in 1970.
