Slide photograph of two girls playing table tennis in the recreation room. Believed in Stanhope from the label. Several photos are marked 4, 11, 12, 13, and were taken at the same time (see items 02513 - 02516) Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Stanhope generally looked after girls over 14 either studying or working. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Robin Boyd Foundation
Slide, Robin Boyd, 1956-1957
Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. On the way home, the Boyds visited London, Berlin, Paris and Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel in France.Colour slide in a mount. Slide photograph of the exterior of Harelands on a cloudy day from across Burke Road. Harelands was at 5 Willesmere Road on the corner with Burke Road. Harelands was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for education. Harelands generally looked after children up to the age of 14. Boys then moved to Blamey House and girls went to Stanhope. Harelands was built in the Queen Anne style and is now heritage listed. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Biography, the exceptional life of Wilma Oram Young AM, an Australian Nurse, a captive of the Japanese during WW2. After the War following her return to Australia she was inspired to help her fellow ex POW’s and war veterans through her tireless work with the RSL. Wilma Oram enlisted 0n 12.3 1941 age 24 years VFX58783 in the AANS, embarked for Singapore 2.9.1941, evacuated from Singapore on 12.2.1942 on the Vyner Brooke which was then sunk by the Japanese of Banka Island, they made it to shore on Banka Isl and taken POW for the duration of the War and finally arrived home in Australia on 24.10.1945.Soft cover cardboard, black, white and gold print on front, spine and back, front cover has a collage of B & W photographs of Nurse Wilma Oram Young AM, red, black and gold background colours, 328 pages, white paper, illustrated with B & W photographs.books, biography, nurses, pow’s, ww2 -
