In 1964, Robin and Patricia Boyd spent several weeks on a world tour - Boyd took a leading role at the International Design Conference in Aspen and he also visited Chicago, Yale University, and New York’s World Fair. The Boyds then travelled on to England, Finland (especially to see Tapiola), Russia and India to see Le Corbusier's Chandigarh, and also Hong Kong and Thailand.Colour slide in a mount. But the big difficulty was that the course of the lead could not be ascertained, or even accurately guessed at, until a shaft had been sunk. When deep sinking began, many diggers did weeks of useless work, sinking a shaft down to where they thought the course of the lead lay, only to find that it was not there at all. Programme and menu for Melbourne Legacy's 61st Annual Dinner on Saturday, 2nd March, 1985. Dinner was held at the Heidelberg Civic Centre. Event included President's Report and Installation of Legatee T. C. Bannister as Melbourne Legacy President for 1985. Each year Melbourne Legacy would have an Annual Dinner for the installation of the incoming President (Changeover dinner). It is one of the most important events of the year. Up until 2005 each President served for one year. Whilst the rules of the Club nominate one year terms, since 2005 Presidents have been renominated to serve for a second year. Robin Boyd wrote two books on Japanese architects and architecture - “Kenzo Tange” published by George Braziller in 1962 and “New Directions in Japanese Architecture” published by Studio Vista in 1968. During the 1960s he travelled several times to Japan to research these books and as part of his role as Exhibits Architect for the Australian Pavilion at Expo ‘70 in Osaka.Colour slide in a mount. Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. On the way home, the Boyds visited London, Berlin, Paris and Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel in France.Colour slide in a mount. A film of the 1959 rehearsal for Junior Legatee Demonstration at Melbourne Olympic Swimming Stadium. The commentary notes how the fitness programmes avoided bad posture which would 'lead to a loss of confidence in a sensitive child' and helped them to avoid 'falling into bad company and delinquency.' It also noted the 'wise counsel' given to their mothers by Legatees and details the assistance available from Legacy to 9,000 fatherless families in Victoria alone. There are synchronised exercises, judo demonstrations, mass marching, girls creative dancing and a final tableau in readiness for two night's public performances. It is in black and white and last 14 mins, 16mm B/W, Sound. This film has been digitised to preserve its content.
