Melbourne Legacy
Newspaper - Article, Pharmacy Winners, 1959
A newspaper clipping from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The newspaper clipping from March 1962, shows a photo of Pharmacy College prize winners. The article mentions that Heather Thompson of Ballarat received three prizes for her work as a second year student. Heather's name is underlined which shows she was associated with Stanhope. She was a junior legatee that stayed at Stanhope while she studied at Pharmacy College. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Harelands accomodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. A record of a Stanhope girl being successful in her studies and the matron keeping a clipping from the newspaper. It shows how important the girls' successes were for the staff at Stanhope.Newspaper clipping of a Stanhope junior legatee winning a prize from Pharmacy College.stanhope, junior legatee -

Newsletter - City of Moorabbin Historical Society Apr 2007, April 2007 1st Issue, April 2007
The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. The approaching Centenary of the area as a Municipality in 1962 , - formation of the Moorabbin Roads Board 1862, - encouraged interest in the ‘History of Moorabbin’ and the Mayor Doug Clark was persuaded to call a public meeting for the formation of an Historical Society. Thirty citizens attended this meeting in November 1960 at which Mr Latham , Royal Historical Association, encouraged them to do so. Mr Tom .A. Sheehy, Author of ‘Battlers tamed a Sandbelt - Moorabbin 50 years a City ‘, moved for the formation of the ‘City of Moorabbin Historical Society’, and was seconded by Councillor E A Le Page. A vote was taken among attendees and Mr Tom A Sheehy was elected Foundation President, Cr E A Le Page Vice President, Mr J A Stretton Secretary and they and the other members “ began a programme of research in order to have reliable information available in time for the Centenary.” p148 Following a call for donations of items of Historical interest, the residents of the City of Moorabbin donated a wide variety of artefacts, photographs, household goods, farm machinery, letters, documents, clothing, and personal effects which have been carefully preserved by succeeding CMHS members and are displayed at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newslletter is an important record of the activities of CMHSA4 paper printed both sides x1 This is the first of the bi-monthly, City of Moorabbin Historical Society Newsletter produced by Society member and Secretary, Mrs Helen Stanley in April 2007. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Newspaper article about Eric Wigglesworth - Australian accidentologist - researcher who works full-time analysing the third killer in the country - accidents. Eric is a project officer with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and gave a paper on occupational accidents at the Australian Medical Congress, 22 August 1974. In his analysis, he found certain times of the day were more prone to accidents and "that the more children a man has, the more chance he has of having an accident at work." "Some of his more humorous collegues have suggested this is because these people are not new to accidents". Eric became one of the initial group to form the Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) at Ballarat.A4 sheet with article stuck on. Newspaper clipping titled: “Trackless and with rubber wheels, it may be our next generation trams” by Timna Jacks Newspaper clipping from the Age 02/05/2021 Rubber wheels, electric batteries and no overhead wires could be the future for Melbourne’s trams. By 2025, 100 new trams will be designed and built due to a $1.5 billion government injection to fund 100 ‘‘next-generation trams’’, replacing A and Z-Class trams. Two manufacturers have been shortlisted to design and build the trams: French rail manufacturer Alstom and a joint venture comprising Spanish rail maker CAF and UGL. At 25 metres long – about eight metres shorter than the newest E-Class trams – the trams will carry 150 passengers, fewer than the E-Class, which carry 210 people. Despite the smaller size, seating will remain proportionally comparable with the E-Class, with 48 people or a third of passengers getting a seat on the new fleet. The new fleet will be the first in Melbourne to be partly powered by on-board batteries.trams, tramways, yarra trams, keolis downer, caf, rolling stock, e class, z class, a class, ugl, tramcar acquisition, tramcar design, tramcar manufacture -
