Book - Rag Book, Dean & Son, The Life of a Bold AB on his Ship in the Rolling C, c. 1902
This cloth or rag book “The Life of a Bold AB on his Ship in the Rolling C” is a child’s ABC or A-Z illustrated book written in poetic form with the theme of the British Navy at turn of 20th century. This rare book is one of the first cloth books manufactured for children. It is likely that the book was illustrated by Will Kidd and published in London by Dean and Son, circa 1902, according to research of similar books. The book was sent to Flagstaff Hill as padding around the donated medal of Nelson Johnson for bravery at the time of the shipwreck of Eric the Red. This medal is also in our collection. The book was published by Dean & Son of London, established around 1800.This book is an early example of early 20th century children's literature.Rag book (or cloth book), child's book "The Life of a Bold AB on his ship in the rolling C". Kew Historical Society Inc
Slide - Flèche, Kew Court House, 1980
A civic campaign for new public offices developed in Kew in the 1880s. After much deliberation, the location chosen was the junction of Bulleen and Cotham Roads. The buildings were designed by George Watson and John Henry Harvey, architects within the Department of Public Works (Victoria). Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue. The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. They are historically and architecturally significant to the State of Victoria because Watson and Harvey's designs exhibit diversity in integrating civil offices, they accommodate the apex of road junctions, and they demonstrate a departure from the contemporaneously favoured High Victorian Classical to the Queen Anne style in the design of civic buildings. 35mm colour transparency of the flèche on the roof of the Kew Court House at the corner of High Street and Cotham Road. The building is a significant example of the English Queen Anne Revival style. The photograph was taken as part of a series by Ralph Andrews (Department of Building, RMIT) in April 1980.kew post office, khs - slides, new public offices -- kew (vic.), architectural styles -- english queen anne revival -

According to Running Journal at the time, the roller was considered for preservation at the time of closure, but finances at the time prevented this. However it was "officially" acquired and added to the TMSV collection in early 1973. I further believe that TMSV advised the SEC that if funding was available to move the vehicle to Bylands, then it would take it. Doug Wiseman agreed to store the roller on his Yendon property." ballarat, tramways, trams, jelbart, road roller, bylands, tmsv, jelbart -

Book, Hutchinson & Co LTD, The Golden Plague, c1930
Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern, Victoria in 1898. His family moved to the region during the gold rush and continued to resided in the area, purchasing land adjacent the Murray River. Busse completed his secondary education at Wesley College in Melbourne then studied law at the University of Melbourne. Busse went on to become a barrister, often in the chambers of Sir Leo Finn Bernard Cussen (1859-1933) a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Busse was also an avid fictional writer and in 1930 he published two novels "The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia” and "The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties." "The Golden Plague” won the T. E. Role gold medal for the best historical novel which went on to become a best seller. Busse often drew inspiration for his novels from his younger years living Chiltern. His passion for the region lead him to write “The History of Chiltern” which was published in a serial form in the Chiltern Federal Standard from 1922-1923.
