Currency - Banknote, Bank of Australasia, One-pound, 1st July 1903
This one-pound banknote is one of a set of four banknotes issued by the Bank of Australasia's Head Office in Sydney, New South Wales. Two banknotes are dated before the Federation of Australia on 1st January 1901 and two are dated just two years after Federation. Each of the banknotes in this set has a rectangular piece cut from it. This indicates that the banknote was cancelled when the note was exchanged for Australian dollars after Decimal Currency was introduced on 14th February 1966. The Bank of Australasia was established under the Royal Charter of England. It first came to Australia in 1835, opening in Sydney. The Bank of Australasia was the first bank in Warrnambool. It was established in 1854 and operated from leased buildings on Merri Street and then Timor Street. The bank opened its own building on May 21, 1860, on the northeast corner of Timor and Kepler Streets. In that year, the Acting Superintendent of the Bank of Australasia in Sydney was David Charters McArthur. He went on to become the Superintendent from 1867-to 1876. In 1951 the Bank of Australasia amalgamated with the Union Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank, now known as the ANZ. Then in 1970 the ANZ merged with both the ES&A and the London Bank of Australia to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The ANZ Banking Group Ltd kindly donated a variety of historic items from the Bank of Australasia. This set of banknotes has historical significance as it was used by the Bank of Australasia, the first bank in Warrnambool. The bank was established in 1854 and continued until its merger, when it became the ANZ Bank in 1951 and is still in operation today. The bank was an integral part of the establishment and growth of commerce in Colonial Warrnambool, Victoria, and Australia. The banknotes also have a significant place in Australia’s history as two notes are just prior to Federation and two notes just after Federation.One-pound note, one of a set of four (4) notes published by The Bank of Australasia, Sydney, New South Wales. The obverse of the note is printed in black ink with the denomination and its round pound-coin symbol printed in green ink. There is no printing on the reverse. A black ink stamp is impressed twice on each side of the note, stating that the note is cancelled. Handwritten red ink text is on the note's obverse and pencil text on the reverse. A unique Serial number is printed twice on the obverse. The banknote has a rectangular cut-out notch on the lower edge. Printed: (Serial Number) "Q50,806" "ONE POUND" "NEW SOUTH WALES" "1st July 1903" Stamped: "BANK OF AUSTRALASIA / CANCELLED" Handwritten in red pen: "undecipherable [initials]" Text in pencil "L24"flagstaff hill, warrnambool, one pound note, bank of australasia, legal tender, £1, banknote, banknotes, flagstaff hill maritime museum & village, shipwreck coast, five poind note, australian currency, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, union bank, australia & new zealand bank, anz bank, david charters mcarthur, d c mcarthur, one-pound note, five-pound note, £5, sydney, new south wales, pre-federation, post-federation, currency, banknote set -
Ruyton Girls' School
Magazine, Ruyton Girls' School, The Ruytonian, 1935
In July 1909, a modest 12-page booklet was put together by members of the fledgling Old Ruytonians Association (ORA) and distributed to the Ruyton Girls' School community. It was one of their first projects, and their aim was to nurture continuing interest in the School among former and current students. They named it "The Ruytonian." At first, The Ruytonian was produced twice yearly, and always bore a plain cover with a simple name banner. Initially, it was the work of volunteer editors from the ORA, but in 1913 they handed the publication over to the first student editors, Esther Gibson and Lucy Tickell. Since that time, the style and content of The Ruytonian has continuously evolved. The biggest shifts occurred in 1942 when it transitioned to a yearly publication, and in 1969 when it moved to a larger A4 format with a cover image specifically selected for that year. The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Due to the age of the record dating back to 1935, we can infer it is one of the few remaining complete, intact and original examples of The Ruytonian from this period. Therefore, it can be considered an outstanding representation of its type, and is a reference example for research in early Victorian school history. The record's significance is further enhanced by its exceptionally well-documented provenance, having remained the property of Ruyton Girls' School since its production.Colour publication printed on papyrus coloured paper. 41 pages.Front Cover: D. The collection of 21 slides reveals that the tour covered all parts of Kew, but focused understandably on heritage buildings and sites.Image of an historic place in Kew that can be dated to an exact time and place. The images, albeit amateurish in composition, frequently reveal aspects of important buildings and sites that have changed over time.35mm colour transparency of Raheen in Studley Park Road, Kew in 1976. The building of the house commenced in 1870, while major additions were made in 1884. The view is of the fence and tower. Presumably the photograph was taken from Studley Park Road. Slide, Government House Christmas Party, 1950s
Colour slide of girls enjoying rocking playground equipment at Government House. Melbourne Legacy held an annual Christmas Party for Junior Legatees and Widows at Government House for many years. The year is unknown but likely to be during the 1950s. A group of slides in glass mounts with green tape are probably from a couple of consecutive years. They will be catalogued separately. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image is the best available.A record of a Legacy Christmas party held at Government House.Colour slide of two girls in a rocking seesaw at a Legacy Christmas Party at Government House, in a glass mount with green tape.christmas party, government house party -

Slide - Central Pediment: Kew Post Office, 1980
A civic campaign for new public offices developed in Kew in the 1880s. After much deliberation, the location chosen was the junction of Bulleen and Cotham Roads. The buildings were designed by George Watson and John Henry Harvey, architects within the Department of Public Works (Victoria). Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue. The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. They are historically and architecturally significant to the State of Victoria because Watson and Harvey's designs exhibit diversity in integrating civil offices, they accommodate the apex of road junctions, and they demonstrate a departure from the contemporaneously favoured High Victorian Classical to the Queen Anne style in the design of civic buildings. 35mm colour transparency of the central pediment, clock and chimneys of the Kew Post Office on the corner of High Street and Cotham Road. The [former] post office is a significant example of the English Queen Anne Revival style. The photograph was taken as part of a series by Ralph Andrews (Department of Building, RMIT) in April 1980.kew post office, khs - slides, new public offices -- kew (vic.), architectural styles -- english queen anne revival -
