Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s.The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Programme for a Civic Dinner in the Kew Recreation Hall hosted by the Mayor of Kew, Cr. Programme, Fourteenth Subscription Concert / Kew Philharmonic Society, 1951
The Kew Philharmonic Society was founded by Dr. Ehrenfeld, c.1946, who was also the Orchestra's first conductor. He was succeeded by Harold Badger in 1954 following the death of the former. During the 1940s and 1950s, the Orchestra played its concerts in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street. In 1960, the Orchestra relocated to the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road (the site of the current Kew Library).The Arthur Dear Collection is a comprehensive collection of theatrical ephemera relating to performances by theatrical and musical organisations from within and outside the former City of Kew who typically performed at venues in Kew during the 1950s and 1960s.Concert programme of the fourteenth subscription concert of the Kew Philharmonic Society. Programme of a Legacy Demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall on 29th October 1936. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Set of four Enamel signs, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled "Children's Carriages which fold compactly may be permitted on cars at conductors discretion and owner's risk". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process. Style Used from early 1920's.Demonstrates the form of compulsory stop that the MMTB used in Melbourne. Phased out from the mid 1970's. Similar signs used by the SEC in Ballarat and Bendigo. One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled "Passengers are requested not to enter into conversation with the motorman when tram is in motion". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process. On the rear is part of a paper sign about mounting the sign with screws and not using nails and the name of the manufacturer "Simpson & S? Pirie Street......" Ceremonial object - JOHN FREDERICK HARPER COLLECTION:LODGE REGALIA - APRON, 1950-1990's
Object. Rich royal blue grosgrain braid, 10 cms wide surrounds a rectangle of cream kid leather, 21 cm wide x 24 cms deep. On this rectangle is an embroidered wreath of foliage in gold and orange coloured thread, embellished with gold metal thread, which also outlines an embroidered bow, at the base of the wreath. In the centre of the wreath, a looped bow is embroidered in thread, and embellished with the gold metal thread. Two gold coloured metal decorative shapes are placed, one on each side of the lower edge of the leather. Two 5 cm wide tabs, adorned with a heavy lodge symbol, including 4 cm long brass metal chain, with ball decorative elements, hang from the waist, and fall to 3/4 length of the leather panel. A peaked flap 9 cm deep is attached from the waistband, and falls loosely over the leather panel. It is also adorned with a brass metal lodge symbol.
