Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Fawns Brewery, High Street, circa 1860. James Fawns arrived on the Bendigo diggings in 1853 and soon established a brewery near the Foundry Arms Hotel in Old High Street, Golden Square. He later closed this brewery and erected an establishment in High Street known as the London Brewery. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 25/6/2000 titled The Mine Flooding Crisis - Bendigo's Deputation to Mines Minister McBride by James Lerk. The participants in the deputation were S H McGowan, J H Craig, G A Petrie, J G Stanfield, George Lansell Junior, H E Rowe, A Capper Moore, I E Dyason, S L Stirling, Senator McColl, J Sternberg, T Hicks and T Glass. It was hoped the Government would provide a pound for pound subsidy for the unwatering of the Victoria Quartz. Of the 11 mines, 5 were willing to contribute. The Minister thought dams would be ineffective. Bendigo Weekly date unknown. '' Snippets of Bendigo history'' by Edith Lunn the View Street story continued. In this article Edith Lunn describes Dudley House, originally the survey office and the oldest permanent government building in Bendigo. From 1854 surveyor Richard Larritt worked there. It was in 1890 that the name Dudley house was attached to the building. Town clerks W. Honeybone and H.C. Inleton lived there. Later it was the home of Dr. Peter Slater, after he moved out city engineer Mr. Rex Anderson moved in. After his death the Bendigo branch of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria established its home there after 25 years Dudley House reverted to the Council.
