Ephemera - Point Ormond Timetable, Last Tram record, 22-10-1960
The MMTB Timetable details the trips from Elsternwick or Point Ormond for each day of the week. The sheet records the time of the last tram, 1036pm, driver G Loft No. 2480, and the tram as X2 677 on 22-10-1960. The donor advised that the MMTB following the practice adopted for the Bourke St changeover in 1940, the MMTB chose to pull the tram service before the last advertised trip for the day. Those present to ride the last started early and rode up and down for quite a few runs, then, on one arrival at Elsternwick Station, the Inspector (known as grasshoppers or Braids) on board instructed the driver to keep going and we rode through to GH Depot without paying another fare. They noted a half-cab bus, destination 'Clifton Hill', lurking ready to take up the running. The donor reported (and as you will see from the endorsements on the timetable) “I circled the time of the last run and got the signature and badge number of the driver. The official records of the Lioness Club of Kew, of which this object is a part, are held in trust by the Kew Historical Society.The Lioness Club of Kew was the first Lioness Club in the Melbourne area. As such its records are of Historic and Social Significance as a record of post-war community organisations run by women. As the records were donated to the Kew Historical Society as a place of deposit, they are well provenanced. They comprise albums, objects, and a history of the Club so provide a complete picture of the Club's operation.Brass Bell, with attached wooden gavel. The bell was used in meetings of the Kew Lioness Club from about 1978 to 1992. The wooden gavel was made by Ray Boothroyd. From 1845, separate and competing volunteer fire brigades were established in Melbourne and grew in number. Following the passage of the Fire Brigades Act 1890 and the creation of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) on 1 May 1891, the 56 volunteer brigades that then existed were disbanded and the firefighters were invited to join the MFB. The MFB was abolished in 2020 and the firefighters absorbed into the newly established Fire Rescue Victoria.White coloured rectangular shaped card printed in black on both sides. This replica booklet documenting the details of the winning races by the thoroughbred racehorse Phar Lap shows the continuing interest today in the exploits of Phar Lap in the 1930s. Phar Lap captured the imagination of the Australian public during the Great Depression with his 37 wins from 51 starts, including a Melbourne Cup. He died in the USA in 1932 in controversial circumstances. At the time he was the third highest stakes winner in the world. His preserved hide is on display at the Melbourne Museum.This booklet is of some interest as Phar Lap is Australia’s best known racehorse. The booklet could be used in exhibits.This is a small booklet of 48 pages containing the details of the racehorse Phar Lap’s 37 race victories in the years 1930, 1931 and 1932. It has a reproduction colour image on the front cover of a painting of Phar Lap and his jockey from the 1930 Melbourne Cup Day Official Programme. This pair of embroidered badges were worn on the sleeves of the red City of Brighton Mayoral robes until Coat of Arms were granted in 1970 by the British College of Heraldry. Brighton was first incorporated as a borough on 18 January 1859, it became a town on 18 March 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 12 March 1919.Two oval shaped City of Brighton mayoral robe badges, embroidered and mounted on red felt. The badges have a black border with CITY OF BRIGHTON embroidered on the top and the British Coat of Arms on the bottom. The Australian Heritage Festival is a yearly event organised by the National Trust. Organisations can register their events held during a month, with dates varying in each state. In 2023, tours of the Mission were organised over three week ends. And two sessions about the restoration of the Manse chairs were presented by Tim Wilmot from the Furniture History Society.
