Newspaper - Article, Every Picture tells a story, 12/07/1998
Article in 'The Age' Agenda, 12/7/1998 telling the story of the lost McCubbin painting 'Bush Idyll' which is surrounded by mystery. The painting had been missing for 60 years and first came to light in Britain in the late 1970's. In 1984 David Waterhouse, prominent punter and former bookmaker purchased the painting for $150,000 on the condition that he did not sell it for ten years. Demonstrates how the SEC used enamel signs to convey instructions to passengers or to confirm the advice of the conductor and how enamel signs were made.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on white background, with words in lower case "NOTICE It is the Conductor's duty to issues a Check for every fare received. This Check denotes the destination to which the Passenger is entitled to travel, and must produced on demand, or another fare paid.". Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process and holes in each corner. The words "NOTICE" and "produced on" and "another fare" have been chipped off. On rear is a manufacturer's notice (A. Simpson and Son Limited Enamellers of Pirie St Adelaide) regarding fixing the sign and possible damage to surface. V. Mawby in the Electra Hall, following his appointment at Departmental Tramway Superintendent in Melbourne. Has been with the SEC for 29 years. Gives details of the speakers at the function. 2 - untitled, dated 3-2-1951, about the appointment of Mr,. L.J. Denmead as SEC Branch Tramway Superintendent. Notes he was formally with the MMTB. 3 - "Popular Tramway Inspector Dead" - 10-6-1949 - reporting one the death of Harold Phillip (Freddie) James. Worked for the trams for 41 years, was 61 when he died. Gives an outline of his Ballarat activities. 4 - "Recalls Steam Trams" - 15-3-1946 - about the retirement of Mr. W. K. K. Dunstan, as the local branch office manager for the SEC and his commencement in Bendigo when steam trams were operating. 5 - "Drove First Electric Tram" - undated - Mr. G. A. Laurens who retired from the SEC in August last, after 41 years of service. Drove first tram in Ballarat and Bendigo. Note the tram does not have a driver. Introduces reports by Alex Easton on pages 2, 6 and 7. On Page 2, titled "Taking tourism to the next level", has details of the Council viewpoints on the proposal, public consultation, a map of the route, and notes on the construction issues. Has a digital image of 13 crossing Sturt St. into Lydiard St. North.
