Photos documenting this address as part of a photographic series undertaken by volunteer photographers during 2013 and 2014 for The Street Where You Live Project. This was organised through the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and covered the postcode 3127 in the cities of Boroondara and Whitehorse.These photos provide a snapshot of real estate in the suburbs of Mont Albert and Surrey Hills during a period of rapid change with many properties on large blocks demolished to create higher density residential development or renewal of single dwellings. At particular risk were properties not covered by heritage overlays, especially interwar housing and post 1950's housing.

Photos of two tanks driving along Swanston Street taken from the windows of Legacy House. The occasion is not known. The tanks appear to be Leopard 1. One has elaborate equipment on the front. The date is approximately the late 1990s as the Queen Victoria Hospital has been demolished and the QV building has not been started. On the site opposite Legacy House is an open air market called The Sailyards, and what appears to be an ice rink or mini golf, called The Icehouse. The barn is situated near Råbelöv castle, and near the small medieval church adjacent to the property, that is a popular baptismal and wedding church. Råbelöv Castle is a castle in Kristianstad Municipality, Scania, in southern Sweden. The castle was built in 1637. In this year, Christopher Ulfeld Råbelöf's current main building, his and his wife's initials were still on the north end. He died in 1657 and was succeeded at Råbelöf first by his son Björn, then by his nephew Otto. Both died young, whereby Christopher's son Ebbe, married to Hedewig, daughter of Christian IV and his second wife, Kirsten Munck, took office in 1663. In 1676 - 1678 Kristianstad was held by the Danes, but was besieged by Charles XI. The siege staff were located at Råbelöf, both on the enclosed yard and on a moat surrounded by a islet just west of the farm. During this time, Råbelöf was held by Ebbe's daughter Anna Catharina, married to Carl Gustaf Skytte. The latter settled for a time in 1712 on the fortified island within the moat to protect himself from the then ravaging plague. From the Skåne trip in 1749, Linnaeus describes homes and a lovely garden with mulberry and walnut trees, grapes, lavender and white lilies in abundance. The owner was then Anna Catharina Ridderschantz, married to Ludvig Gustaf von Böhnen. She made 1763 Råbelöf and Odersberga fidei committee for the benefit of her three daughters. The Fidei Commission letter is difficult to interpret when it comes to the time after the three daughters, something that several times caused bitter heritage disputes. In 1782 the entire farm burned, the main building was badly damaged and the family moved to Råbelöf belonging to Odersberga, which then had completely new buildings, those that are still there today. Only in 1833 then did the fidei commissioner Fredrik von Rosen return to Råbelöf. The main building had then been cut down and fitted with a new south gable. According to fidei commission rules, Råbelöf returned to the von Böhnen family in 1864. Accession did not become presumed Celestine von Böhnen but instead her older brother Axel. Celestine was married to John William Kennedy. The fide commission went to her and John Williams son James Kennedy. The family could then look back on a number of tortuous legal proceedings between John William and his wife Celestine on the one hand and Axel and his wife Elsa Maria on the other. James was a chamberlain, sitting in the first chamber where he fought socialism. This led to the large agricultural workers' strike in 1907 that was concentrated on Kennedy's three farms Råbelöf, Odersberga and Hammarsjö. In 1906, his eldest son Douglas, the future fidei commissioner, took his life. Four years later another son took his life. James and his wife took the disasters hard, they fell ill. The young son Gilbert got in 1908, only 22 years old, took over responsibility for the farm. James son Gilbert Kennedy took over as Fidei Commissioner in 1916 and they became known as outstanding farmers with, among other things, grazing for dairy cows and fruit growing as specialties. He passed away in 1946 and was succeeded by his son Douglas, who gave continuity to Råbelöf's position with among other things, a new barn with loose running and slatted floors in 1965. Douglas Kennedy held the farm 61 years before he passed away in 2007. He became the last fidei commissioner, the property became a fideicommissie corporation inherited by his sister-in-law John Murray, who in turn in 2010 left it his children Caroline Murray Karlsson and Johan Murray. Alice Webb Russell embroidered this tapestry when she was 13 years of age in 1854 at Torphichen, Scotland. This is near Linlithgow Palace which is depicted in the tapestry. The initials of her family are at the side of the image. Produced c. 1910 by The Rose Stereograph co. This colourised photographic postcard shows the exterior of the administrative buildings at Mayday Hills mental hospital with three young boys in the foreground. This postcard forms part of the extensive Rose Series. (P. 4689) of postcards being produced by the Rose Stereograph co. which depicted landmarks from across Australia. Despite the early date attributed to this image, according to Walsh dates from this series place the postcards being produced typically between 1920-54. Mayday Hills Hospital, then known as the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum was constructed between 1864-67 designed by The Public Works Department. The hospital is made up of a number of buildings, landscaping, ha-ha, workshops, laundry, administrative facilities and farmland, it was constructed in 'Italianate' style by a team of up to two hundred and fifty workers (Woods p. 122). The asylum was established in response to the need for the regional shire to locally care for those particularly affected by their time working the Ovens goldfield during the Indigo Shire gold rush era where poor living conditions and isolation were significantly affecting the welfare of a great many people through poverty and lack of resources. The gaol and orphan labour systems were not able to effectively support to give housing, rehabilitation and ongoing care for the mentally ill, and transporting to Melbourne by waggon was a time consuming and counter-productive solution when the metro facilities were already overcrowded. According to Woods (A Titan's Field p. 122), between 1901 and 1911 a large percentage (thirty five percent in 1901 and twenty four in 1911) of the Beechworth population were either patients or inmates of Beechworth institutions, Mayday Hills accounted for some six hundred and seventy four patients in 1901, Beechworth's Mayday Hills was chosen as the site of Victoria's newest asylum, at the time, due to the landscape and altitude. The hilltop atmosphere and the native fauna, it was argued, would assist in the cure of the patients kept at the hospital (Wood 1985, 122). The positioning of the hospital had a beneficial effect on the rural town and the large volume of people living at the hospital and contributing to this population growth is counted as reason for the survival of Beechworth as a regional township. Mayday Hills continued to function as a mental hospital up until 1995 when it was sold to LaTrobe university. The building and grounds are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register under criterion A, B, D, E and F. Advised by Tony Smith - 29/3/2017 "The tram in question is VR 39. It was one of the last 4 trams disposed of from Elwood depot in 1959 after the system closed. They were purchased complete by Upton's machinery dealers of Corowa. The other cars were 29, 33 & 37. He then stripped them and sold the bodies. When we obtained VR 41 in 1977 we immediately went searching for other bodies that might yield parts to help in rebuilding 41. We located 37 on the outskirts of Wangaratta and it yielded many body items including a complete drivers bulkhead that was used to replace the one in VR 41 that had been cut out with an axle by the previous owner. You may also recall that we obtained 3 complete broad gauge 77e trucks from Upton's (they had cut up the other 5 bogies years previous). A quarry was transformed into the Blue Lake. Published: Nillumbik Now and Then /​ Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p179 The dramatic steep-sided Plenty Gorge lies along the divide of two geological areas, and separates the Nillumbik Shire and the City of Whittlesea. On the Nillumbik side are undulating hills and sedimentary rock, and in Whittlesea, lies a basalt plain formed by volcanic action up to two million years ago. This provides the Plenty Gorge Park with diverse vegetation and habitats, making it one of Greater Melbourne’s most important refuges for threatened and significant species. The park, established in 1986, consists of around 1350 hectares, and extends 11 kilometres along the Plenty River, from Greensborough to Mernda. It provides a wildlife corridor for around 500 native plant and 280 animal species. The area’s plentiful food and water attracted the Wurundjeri Aboriginal people and then European settlers. By 1837 squatters had claimed large runs of land for their sheep and cattle. The Plenty Valley was among the first in the Port Phillip District to be settled - mainly in the less heavily timbered west - and was proclaimed a settled district in 1841.But by the late 1880s, the settlers’ extensive land clearing for animal grazing, then agriculture, depleted the Wurundjeri’s traditional food sources, which helped to drive them away. Many Wurundjeri artefacts remain (now government protected), and so far 57 sites have been identified in the park, including scarred trees, burial areas and stone artefacts. Pioneer life could be very hard because of isolation, flooding, bushfires and bushrangers. Following the Black Thursday bushfires of 1851, basalt was quarried to build more fire-resistant homes. Gold discoveries in the early 1850s swelled the population, particularly around Smugglers Gully; but food production made more of an impact. In the late 1850s wheat production supplanted grazing. In the 1860s the government made small holdings available to poorer settlers. These had the greatest effect on the district, particularly in Doreen and Yarrambat, where orchards were established from the 1880s to 1914. Links with a prominent early family are the remains of Stuchbery Farm, by the river’s edge bounded by Smugglers Gully to the north and La Trobe Road, Yarrambat, to the east. The Stuchberys moved to the valley in 1890, and the family still lives in the area. In 1890, Alfred and Ada first lived in a tent where four children were born, then Alfred built the house and outbuildings around 1896. They planted an orchard, then a market garden, and developed a dairy. The family belonged to the local Methodist and tennis communities. Their grandson Walter, opened the Flying Scotsman Model Railway Museum in Yarrambat, which his widow, Vi, continues to run. Wal was also the Yarrambat CFA Captain for 22 years until 1987. Walter sold 24 hectares in 1976 for development - now Vista Court - and in 1990, the remaining 22.6 hectares for the park. Remaining are an early stone dairy and remnants of a stone barn, a pig sty and a well. Until it was destroyed by fire in 2003, a slab hut stood on the Happy Hollow Farm site, at the southern end of the park. The hut is thought to have been built in the Depression around 1893. This was a rare and late example of a slab hut with a domestic orchard close to Melbourne. Emmet Watmough and his family first occupied the hut, followed by a succession of families, until the Bell family bought it around 1948. There they led a subsistence lifestyle for 50 years, despite encroaching Melbourne suburbia. The Yellow Gum Recreation Area includes the Blue Lake, coloured turquoise at certain times of the year. Following the 1957 bushfires, this area was quarried by Reid Quarries Pty Ltd for Melbourne’s first skyscrapers, then by Boral Australia. However in the early 1970s water began seeping into the quarry forming the Blue Lake and the quarry was closed. The State Government bought the site in 1997 and opened it as a park in 1999.This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. THE ECHUCA COALING STAGE. Locomotives would stop alongside to receive coal dropped into their tenders from small overhead rail mounted tipping trays. Water could be obtained from either the elevated tank at one end or the connected standpipe at the opposite end. Locomotive firebox contents could be dumped into pits between the rails from locomotives once they were carefully positioned above them. Such locomotives then could move onto the Engine Shed area for overnight parking.
