The teacher at the Platrithia Primary School was Katina Lekatsas. Many of the school children in the photograph are dressed in the military style uniform of the National Youth Organization established in Greece during the years of the Metaxas (1936–1941) dictatorship. The youth movement disintegrated after the regime’s ending in April 1941. Despite the regime being a right wing dictatorship, Metaxas refusal to submit to imperialist and fascist Italy resulted in Greece entering WWII on the side of allies.Compulsory primary school education was established in Greece during the second half of the nineteenth century. Original, black and white positive print which the inscription on the reverse incorrectly claims is of Kew during the 1934 floods. The date may be 1934, but there is no evidence of flood waters or of location. The photo is of an intersection with a hotel on the corner in front of which a man is standing. The hotel would appear to be named Russell['s] Hotel. There is also an advertisement for Willys on the hotel verandah. Inscribed verso: "Yarra Floods Kew 1934" unidentified locations

Severe earthquakes struck across the Ionian Islands in Greece in 1953, causing widespread devastation. Some villages were totally destroyed resulting in many people forced to relocate and a further wave of emigration to other countries, including Australia.Following the post WW2 migration from Ithaca, the earthquakes brought about yet another wave of migration from the island.
