This T-shirt was worn by John Barker who was the son of E J Barker who from 1949-1960 was a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). Then from 1960-1964 was Vice Principal at SMB and was Principal of SMB from 1964-76. Then from 1976-1987 was Foundation Director of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) until his retirement. The Library at Federation University was named in honour of E J Barker. John completed a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and a few years later a Bachelor of Engineering. This RAAF dress uniform and other associated article of clothing was owned by Walter Alexander Scott. Joined RAF December 1940 to be trained as a pilot, he got his wings December 1941, became a night fighter pilot after OTU and posted to 219 Squadron. Was posted to 603 Squadron December 1942 flying Beaufighters on coastal command convoy escorts, desert patrols, supporting Sicilian and Italian invasions (all from the N.African desert, then on Greek Island " Armed Rovers" until 10 November 1943, just at the end of ops, when he was shot down in the Aegean Sea and became a POW the next day 11 November 1943. Transferred to Germany he was in Stalag IVB for 3 months, before exchanging ID with an Irish soldier ,in order to get out of the main camp into a working sub-camp in order to escape. Post war Walter returned to Australia, he became "Citizen of the Year" in Werribee 1992 for his service to the community. In 1993 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to youth and to the retired.

The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. The dress was owned and worn by Kew resident, Dione McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. This dressing gown belonged to Clara Johnstone Miller (nee Bell, 1866-1910). Clara was the only daughter of Mr James Bell, a councillor of the Shire of Leigh (today a part of Golden Plains Shire) and owner of Woolbrook Homestead in Teesdale, near Geelong. In 1888, Clara married prominent businessman, racehorse owner, racing identity and pastoralist Septimus Miller (1854-1925). Septimus was the sixth of seven children born to Henry 'Money' Miller and Eliza Miller (nee Mattinson). 'Money' Miller was a well known financier and politician and reputedly one of Australia's wealthiest people in his time. In 1889, Clara and Septimus moved into the house 'Cantala' in Dandenong Road, Caulfield, where they hosted lavish receptions for Melbourne's elite. Clara was known as a stylish hostess who wore elegant imported fashions. This dressing gown is believed to have been manufactured by Japanese silk merchant Shiino Shōbei. Following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859, Shōbei began producing western-style silk garments, initially selling them to foreigners living in Japan and later exporting them around the world, even exhibiting at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880. His popular exports included quilted 'at-home' gowns or dressing gowns similar to this one. They had one child, Gwendoline Stewart Miller, who died in 1902 at the age of thirteen of diabetes - a largely untreatable condition at the time (insulin would not be discovered until 1921). Clara died in 1910, aged only 44. Septimus subsequently married Helen (nee Henderson), with whom he had a son, Ronald (1915-1990). The Millers were buried in the Brighton General Cemetery in a large Gothic-style vault. Upon Clara's death, Septimus sent much of her clothing and Gwendoline's to her mother Mary Bell. Some of these items were passed down to two of Clara's nieces, Miss Mary Bell and Mrs Lois Lillies, who donated them to BHS around 1973.A hand stitched purple pink silk quilted dressing gown with pale pink embroidery from circa 1894. The dressing gown is embroidered from the collar and shoulders though the centre front body to just above the hemline, on the cuffs and remaining pocket in a pale pink Perle thread embroidery featuring leaves and flowers. The entire gown is hand quilted with vertical parallel lines. The gown's neckline features a flat collar and the sleeve head fits on the neat shoulder line. The sleeve head is gathered and full tapering to a loose flat cuff at the wrist. The front of the garment is currently secured by fourteen decorative frogs of two different styles, none of which appear to be original. There is also evidence of a fifteenth toggle that has been removed from the base. The gown's original left hand pocket has been removed and attached to an area around the right breast presumably to patch a hole or obscure some damage. It is unknown when these modifications have been made. The back of the gown features a gathered pink and black concertina pleated silk insert panel from the neck through to the base of the garment. Negligee set or Wedding trousseau for the marriage of Charlotte Edith (Tottie) Ryder (aunt of donor) to Alfred George Tooke (b 1898 England d 1998) held at Church of England, Thornbury on 13 March 19481948 negligee set comprises two pairs of knickers, camisole, bed jacket, petticoat, nightgown. All items are cream coloured satin with appliqued coffee coloured lace. One pair of knickers has appliqued coffee lace encircling each leg with a hand-worked buttonhole and is missing a button. Second pair of knickers has appliqued lace floral design on each leg with an elasticised waist band and a plain band on the legs. Camisole has coffee coloured lace along the top edge and rouleau style shoestring straps. Bedjacket is short with long sleeves and a front fastening with four self-covered buttons and rouleau fastenings. Coffee coloured hand appliqued lace is around the neck and along the bottom. The shoulders are padded. The petticoat has coffee coloured lace around the hem and yoke. It has rouleau style shoestring straps. The nightgown is long with a coffee coloured lace Vee front. Bodice has front opening with three x 2 cm diameter white plastic buttons - peaked in the centre and with an impressed ridged texture. Bodice has two bands of shirring at the front shoulder line giving a ruched effect 6.75 cm wide. Six gored skirt. A band 6.5 cm wide at centre front reducing to 3 cm wide at side seams, forms a midriff panel, before becoming a belt at the back fastening with two metal press-studs. All edges (except hemline) ie sleeves, and centre front, including neck edge, are finished in perle thread, buttonhole stitched two cm wide scallops. Satin stitch, and cut work embroidery, in a floral design, are on the lower edge of the short sleeves and on the front bodice.The waistline has a four cm wide band of ribbon, in an insertion design,- but there is no ribbon insertion evident. This would be the only form of closure, from the waistline a slightly gathered panel,22cm deep, gives a peplum effect. Hemline is faced with a 1.7cm wide cotton facing. The ribbon insertion panel has alternating 1.2cm wide floral embroidered ribbon and one cm wide plain ribbon. Magyer sleeves-extending from the side seam just above the waistline - bodice all one piece of fabric - no seams.Accompaning note - No date. The bloomers (11400.931), belonged to Antoinette Catling of Bendigo and were part of her trousseaux. They would be 80+ years old.
