Medal issued to commemorate the 50th jubilee of the Town of Kew. It names J.F. McCrea as Mayor. John Falding McCrea was Mayor of Kew 1910-11. Kew was proclaimed a municipality on 22 December 1860, seceding from the Boroondara Road Board District, then comprising Kew, Hawthorn and Camberwell. It was proclaimed a town on 8 December 1910, the year this medal was issued, and a city on 10 March 1921. On 22 June 1994 Kew city was united with Camberwell and Hawthorn cities to form Boroondara city. (MV)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Postcard, Like the boomerang may you quickly come back, c1917
Sometimes called a sweetheart postcard, it was a way of sending thoughts to the troops overseas. The printing on the rear implies it was sent with a hamper to the troops overseas. The text and poem on the front says : 'Like the boomerang may you quickly come back. / To wish you a Speedy, Safe and Sure Return. This hamper is sent you with greetings sincere, And the hope that its contents will bring you "good cheer"; While you're doing your bit, we are thinking of you And we'll welcome you home when you've seen the job through, In the meantime just send us a message to say You've received this all right if you find it OK.' Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920.A record of correspondence with the troops in World War 1 and sending good wishes with a hamper. This type of experience would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1.Postcard with a boomerang stapled to the front, also the image of a kookaburra.Printed on the back is' Postcard / Per Hamper Mail / From Griffiths Bros, Syd / To An Australian Hero / on Active Service ABROAD'world war one, war correspondence -

This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. While the page heading says "Walter Burley Griffin arch", in fact Edward F. Billson designed it.From the Victorian Heritage Register Database - Citation for 45 Balaclava Road https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35562 (as at 12/10/2020) The house at 45 Balaclava Road, Caulfield North has architectural importance as an early example of the work of Edward F. Billson, whose work demonstrated the influence of the internationally distinguished American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his one time colleague, Walter Burley Griffin with whom Billson worked in partnership for a period. It is presumed to be the earliest important example Billson's work and attains special importance as an early example of modern architecture in Australia, the earliest work of Griffin preceding it by only five years.Page 30 of Photograph Album with three photographs of the exterior of this double storey house and one photograph of a carport.Handwritten: Walter Burley Griffin arch. 45 Balaclava Road [top right] / Neg 272 [under top left photo] / Neg 270 [under top right photo] / Neg 262 [under bottom left photo] / Neg 264 [under bottom right photo] / 30 [bottom right] trevor hart, caulfield north, balaclava road, edward f. billson, frank lloyd wright, walter burley griffin, modern architecture, 1910's, gables, double storey houses, windows, attics, carports, gardens -
