Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. Certificate - Documents, Funeral James Jones 1940, c1940
James Jones was the son of Philip Jones, a Chairmaker, and Ann Jones who settled in East Brighton after the sale of land c1852 in the area of the Henry Dendy Special Survey of 1841. Mary Ann Moore was the daughter of Thomas Moore, a Gardener, and Sarah Harris who also settled in Brighton c1852. James and Mary Ann Jones settled and raised their family in East Brighton now Bentleigh. Mr John Herron resided at 4 Vickery St Bentleigh until 1989. Sadly Martha Jones born 1888 died in 1890 and James Jones had to purchase a plot at Brighton General Cemetery for her burial. Baby Ethel May was interred in 1893 and then Mary Ann in 1903 and finally James in 1940. Their stillborn baby was buried in the Wesleyan public grave in 1900James Jones and Mary Ann Moore were born in Brighton c1857 and c 1859 into pioneer market gardener families in the area of the Dendy Special Survey of 1841. They married in 1883 and raised their family in East Brighton, now Bentleigh. Sadly infectious diseases took the lives of many infants throughout the Colony of Victoria due to the poor state of water supply and sewerage disposal and locally the swamps of the Elster Creek were a constant breeding ground. Martha Jones born 1888 died 1890 and was interred in the Brighton General Cemetery in a family plot, in the Wesleyan Section, purchased by her father James Jones. In 1893 another daughter Ethel May died and was buried in the family plot. A stillborn baby was interred in the public grave of Brighton General Cemetery in May1900. Mary Ann Jones died, at age 43years, and was interred in January 1903. Card - Christmas card
Ernest Lance Young was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Beryl Mair (1916-1976) was the daughter of David Miller (Dave) Mair and Lily Vipond Deakin. Dave Mair (1879-1938) was founder of the Kangaroo Cricket Club based at the MCG. The logo or emblem of the club was a kangaroo facing forward. From this one can assume that Mr Holland was a member of the club. The card was most probably sent prior in 1939 or soon after as following Dave Mair's death, as a mark of respect, the emblem was changed to a kangaroo facing to the left but with its head turned back. (Information from the donor). This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all of whom had connections with Surrey Hills / Mont Albert. The donor is the daughter of Ernest Lance and Beryl Young.A light green card on thin paper with a total size slightly smaller than A4, folded into four. The lower edge of the front is folded back to reveal an embossed figure of a kangaroo facing forward in burnished gold. Inside are printed greetings personalised from Mr Holland and Marion to Mr and Mrs Young. On the folded triangle of the front in blue biro is the later addition of the number one within a circle. This mark was made by the donor. Inside in blue ink, inner LH side: "To / Mr. & Mrs. Young"; signed below the printed standard greeting in the same hand " Mr. Holland / & / Marion"christmas card, dave mair, david miller mair, ernest lance young, beryl mair, beryl young, mr. - holland, kangaroo club -
