Memorabilia - Souvenir Cushion Cover Egypt 1941
This cushion cover was owned by Arthur Lock, a soldier in the 2/23rd Battalion. After initial training in Albury, N.S.W. and Bonegilla, Victoria, they left for overseas service. Embarking in November 1940 on the transport Strathmore at Port Melbourne, the 2/23rd arrived in Egypt in mid-December. From Egypt they were deployed to Tobruk.This item is part of a collection of items owned by Athur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. Letter from Western Mining Corporation to D.W. Cahill, Barrister, Bendigo dated 1st October, 1980, from J.H. Lalor, Exploration Manager, Minerals, WMC, regarding the objective of the Western Mining Corporation exploration program on the Bendigo goldfield. The major objective is to develop a long term mining operation 'which would be environmentally acceptable' It was considered that the value 'of such an operation to the local community and the Bendigo region would be substantial'. Letter to Robin Boyd from Lesley Murray, Public Affairs Department, Royal Institute of British Architects enclosing the RIBA's printed program for 1971-72 session. It contains a session on 30 November titled 'A Night at the Opera: a commentary on the architectural scene including the Sydney Opera House' to be presented by Robin Boyd. Robin Boyd died on 16 October 1971. The manuscript for this lecture was unfinished at Robin's death in October 1971 (see item D506). It was published in 'Architecture Plus', 'Architecture Plus', Vol.1, No.7, August 1973. Letter plus enclosed A3 size poster with RIBA Programme for 1971-72. -
8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection

The 8th Light Horse (Indi) Regiment superseded the 16th Light Horse in 1919. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941,the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. As Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded. The regimental association visited the 8/13th VMR Museum at Buna Barracks Albury on occasions.
