8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection
Uniform - Uniform 2/8th AR, 1945 circa
Worn by VX45541 Lieutenant Louis A Jackson who served with 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment in Australia and New Guinea during WWII. Following its return from New Guinea in 1944, 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment had a change of role and was redesignated Numbers 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies and served in Pacific Islands till the end of the war. In 1947, Louis Jackson joined the Citizen Forces (CMF) and served as a captain in the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. This uniform is a well provenanced, representative example of WWII clothing as worn by an officer of an armoured regiment. Service dress winter jacket with 37 pattern webbing and belt, and revolver holster. Jacket has lieutenant rank insignia, 'Australia ' metal shoulder titles, 'Rising Sun' collar badges, colour patches of 2nd/8th Armoured Regiment AIF, ribbon bar for 39-45 Star, Pacific Star, British War Medal 39-45 and Australian Service medal 39-45. Uniform - Merchant Navy Cap
This merchant navy officer's cap has a black woollen felt hat band, black woollen felt fixed top cap and a black patent leather peak. Along the top of the peak there is a black patent strap. At the left hand of the peaked cap is a non-standard black plastic button and on the right side is a standard black cloth button. Above the peak there is a black wool badge of an Officer of the Merchant Navy. This insignia has a central, oval reserve of red velvet edged with gold metal coil with base metal anchor at the centre. The oval is surrounded by oak leaves of gold purl with stems of applied gold coil, and surrounded by a stamped base metal crown. The badge is backed with a wool blend fabric and attached to the top cat by brown cotton. Along the base of the hat band there is a bias hem. Inside the cap, the hat band is lined with hessian. A Junior Legacy Certificate presented to Jacobina Bristol on 12 July 1940. The text says 'During the Great War many men offered themselves for Service in the Forces of the Empire. To assist the children of those who fell, or who have died since, the Melbourne Legacy Club was formed. The Children of deceased sailors and soldiers constitute the Junior Legacy Club.' The certificate was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a girls green tunic uniform, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge.
