8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection
Uniform - Honorary Colonel Hammer, 1950 circa

This tunic and cap were worn by Major General H H (Tack) Hammer CBE DSO & Bar, ED when Honorary Colonel 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1959-1960 Hammer had pre-WWII service with 8th Battalion and 17th Light Horse (Machine Gun) Regiment. He served with the 6th Division in North Africa and Greece before becoming Commanding Officer of 2nd/48th Battalion. On return from the Middle East, Hammer commanded the 15th Brigade throughout two years of fighting in New Guinea and Bougainville. After the war, Hammer became Commissioner for Repatriation in Victoria and continued his military career in the Citizens Military Forces, commanding the 2nd Armoured Brigade and later 3rd Division. Open-neck officer's 'Blues' tunic with gold braided general's epaulettes and Major General's embroidered badges of rank; gilt general's buttons; red and gold braided aiguillette and white gloves. Uniform worn by Major General H H (Tack) Hammer when appointed as Honorary colonel of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Medals awarded to Major General Hammer are Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Distinguished Service Order (DSO), Mentioned in Despatches (MID), 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal 1939-45, British War Medal, Australian Service Medal 39-45, Queen Elizabeth Coronation Medal, Efficiency Decoration (ED). Part of the Reverend Chaplain Major Thomas Bruce Williams, No 556101, Collection.Green Army issue work trousers with adjustable waist band, two side pockets, two button down hip pockets and two button down thigh pockets. In addition there are five button down belt loops. All buttons are green plastic. The waist band is secured at the front with a button. Fly is a button down type. The uniform belonged to CAPT GLADYS MOLE VFX17199 AAMC 2nd AIF. Refer 1901.4 for Service History. Items were all numbered 215.01 from a previous institution. See also Reg No 1899 & 1900.2P.WRANC .1) Jacket. Grey, fine wool tailored jacket & skirt. Jacket has full belt fastened with press studs. Front fastened with military buttons, also pocket flaps & 2 buttons on each sleeve. Shoulder epaulettes of dark brown felt with a button 'Australia' badge & 3 captain's pips. Colour patch on each sleeve - brown square on light grey square with central angled blue bar. Service ribbons on right breast. Upper back section & fronts lined with rayon. Hanging tab centre back neck. .2) Shirt. Long sleeved cream cotton shirt with tail, epaulette tabs on shoulders fastened with a button. Front button fastening semi stiff collar. .3) Skirt. Fastens at side with hooks & eyes & 1 button on waist band. .4) Tie. Made of dark brown crepe with silver Rising Sun badge pinned to it. .5) Hat. Grey/green felt velour with band of brown edged both sides with narrow stripes of pale grey & red. Unlined with petersham sweat band & black hat elastic double chin strap. Signs of wear at inner front. .6) & .7) Gloves. Pair, dark brown leather with stitching detail in 3 decorative lines on backs. Previous number 215.01 has been inked inside. .8) & .9) Shoes. Item in the collection re “MAJ. JOHN BALSILLIE MBE” Refer to Cat No 118.5 for his service details, RSL and Council history.Brown leather Sam Browne Belt fitted with double clawed brass buckle. A brass stud and leather loop secured the free end of the belt tongue. The shoulder strap, 32 mm wide, is connected by a similar loop and brass stud arrangement. A pair of "D" shaped rings are mounted at the bottom of the belt (for the sword). The belt also has a flat brass hook mounted against the belt, between the “D” rings. Uniform - Policeman's helmet, A W Sudweeks, 1877 to 1947

This is an original policeman’s helmet, known as a ‘Wolsley’. The design was in use by Victoria Police from 1877 to 1947 then replaced by more suitable caps. The helmets were made in Ballarat by the Victoria Police's official supplier, A W Sudweeks. Some of these helmets were re-sold at Stokes and Sons in Melbourne and would carry that company’s name. This Victoria Police helmet represents an early era in its uniforms, from 1877 to 1947, when the design was based on the English versions. The design was later replaced by head wear that better suited the local climate and conditions. Helmets of a similar shape to this one were worn by the local Volunteer Corps.Policeman’s helmet, Victoria Police. The black, stiffened canvas hat has a high crown and a leather chin strap. The five panels of stiffened canvas are stitched together. The helmet has a metal ventilation dome at the top. The two small holes at the front are for the officer’s identification badge. The helmet has a leather sweatband, and the brim and sweatband are lined with beige fabric. The helmet’s brim is wider at the front. A maker’s label in the shape of a shield is attached inside the helmet, which is made by A.W. Sudweeks of Ballarat. "A. W.
