Programme of a Legacy Demonstration at the AMP Theatrette on 7th, 8th and 9th of September 1977. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. The Kew Lunatic Asylum was completed in 1871 and opened in 1872. The year 1972 marked its centenary. Over the years, members of staff at the asylum collected records, photographs, publications and plans of the asylum, later hospital. The Society has a number of important collections relating to the asylum and the Children's Cottages. These include the Dr Cliff Judge, the Irena Higgins and the Dr Fred Stamp Collections. This portrait photograph is one of a number of items donated by the family of the late Dr. Fred Stamp who was the last medical superintendent. Dr Frederick Stamp graduated from Bristol Medical School (UK) in 1968. He and his family emigrated to Australia in 1977 to Goulburn (NSW), moving to Melbourne in 1980. He became Superintendent in 1981 until the Hospital's closure in 1988. Since the donation was made, the physical item has been declared a Permanent Government Record, and has been transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria in 2020.Following their closure, the medical records of the Kew Mental Hospital and the Children's Cottages Kew were relocated to the archives of the relevant Victorian Government Department and also to the Public Records Office of Victoria. Other collections, such as the Fred Stamp Collection, were assembled by staff who worked at the hospital. The years leading up to the closure of Kew must have been fraught, and many of the items in the hospital were probably destined for hard waste disposal. Dr. Fred Stamp, the medical superintendent, kept aside or rescued a number of these items, of which this is one. Following his death, his family donated these to the Kew Historical Society. The Society recognises these items to be of lasting historical significance, essentially due to their provenance and to their rarity. Together they (and the Judge and Higgins Collections) are an invaluable aid for researchers of the treatment of psychiatric illnesses in Victoria.Dr. Cyril Burt, Medical Superintendent, Kew Mental Hospital 1967-77. A cutting from from a Melbourne Legacy President's report showing a photo of Legatee Bruce M Hall (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1977). It was collected to be a record of a photo of past presidents. Legatee Bruce Hall was the son of Legatee Ray Hall (president in 1931) and nephew of Legatee Rex Hall (president in 1933). In World War 2 Legatee Bruce Hall served with the AIF in Darwin and New Guinea with the 6th Division Signals. He joined Legacy in 1958 on the nomination of Legatees Bill Perrin and Roy Nutting. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. A photo of a smiling girl wading in the ocean. It came from an envelope with other camp photos. Junior Legatees attended Somer's Camp over summer holidays organised by Melbourne Legacy. The newspaper article on 12 January 1977 says it was a day where junior legatees were treated to sailing activities by yachtsmen of Westernport. The boys were at Somers Camp and the girls had been holidaying in the Legacy Camp at Kew. The Legacy envelope was marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The contents will be items 00418 to 00425. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. Early examples of Melbourne Legacy Club newsletters, covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. Information includes a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend monthly meetings, card afternoons, indoor bowls competitions, outings and tours, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The September 1975 edition mentions the 20 flats purchased by Legacy at 9 The Avenue, Windsor and they are being renovated for widows to live in. Two options were presented, an 'ingoing' amount of $5,000 then a week maintenance charge of $7 a week; or on a rental basis of approximately $20 a week. The newsletter was priced at 2c a copy. The price of theatre tickets was $3. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. 29 August 1977 was 100 years since the first patient was admitted to the Ballarat Reformatory. An article from the Bulletin including the text an address by Legatee Kem Kemsley at a Legacy event on 4 October 1977. He discusses the beginnings of Legacy. He starts with Legatee Savige's tip to Hobart and Sir John Gellibrand's Remembrance Club. Then a meeting of the 24th Battalion at Phair's Hotel in 1923 and the men there agreeing to start a similar club, he mentions Sandy Lowe as a member at the meeting in 1977 that was at the initial meeting in 1923. He also mentions other at that initial meeting were Savige, Frank Selleck, Ted Pittard, Bob Irving, and 'Babe' Norman. He relates the approach made to Sir John Monash to be the first president. It was when Savige was in Frank Meldrum's dentist chair that the plan was hatched for Meldrum, (who was playing tennis with Monash's son-in-law, Gershon Bennett), to approach Monash to be president. It shows the nature of relations between high ranking ex servicemen. Instead Monash suggested Colonel Harold Cohen. Initially Legacy was founded with 'one person from each profession or business who will represent that profession until such time as the Club has established itself on a wider basis.' For example there were 'two solicitors - Downing and Armstrong, Meldrum as dentist, George Worboys as plumber, Dr Gardener as the eye specialist, Doolan and Goodchild as Surveyors, Fred Wickham of the Premier's department who was regarded as very important, Baker from Myer's Emporium, Joynt from the printing world and Blackett the architect.' He also mentions a Police Strike and General Monash set up a special constabulary force. Cohen, Kemsley and many of the early legatees answered the call to help keep peace. By December 1923 there were 54 members of the new Legacy club. The name was under consideration as the Tasmanian club was called Remembrance Club. Pip Powell nominated the name of Legacy to be submitted for consideration, but it was Frank Selleck who moved the formal resolution. The speech mentions that Sir Gellibrand was appointed Patron of Legacy and later Monash and Sir Harry Chauvel were chosen. Frank Doolan posed the question 'what does Legacy really mean?' and focus changed toward widows and children. Citing some slightly different dates to those in a later speech about the start of Legacy (at 02029) he says it was July 1926 that they met with widows and a couple of weeks later 142 boys were to attend Anzac House for a Literary and Debating class. Ballarat and Geelong had formed clubs by 1925 and Legatee Hilmer Smith was transferred with his work to Sydney and started a Legacy Club there in 1926. The first Conference was held in November 1926. The first Government House Christmas party for children was held in 1926, when the Governor General of Australia was still residing there. His final words were about his war experiences and relates a speech made by Legatee Brian Armstrong on 28th February 1961 (02502) that also spoke of the area around the Pozieres Windmill that was part of the battle of the Somme in July/August 1916, where so many of the early legatees fought.. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. Montrose Cottage was build c1856 by John Alexander, builder. He was a Scottish stone mason. It was built with bluestone and hand-made bricks. It is on the Historic Buildings Register, National Trust (Victoria). It is important as a substantial and very early stone cottage. The house is now open to the public. It also provides short term accommodation - self contained apartments. Printed sheet gives information of the project and restoration of the cottage. This is the thirtieth issue of the annual Orbost High School magazine. The name Croajingolong derives from the Australian Aboriginal Krauatungalung words galung, meaning "belonging to" and kraua, meaning "east. 2225.1 belonged to Mary Gilbert, a former teacher at the school. 2225.2 belonged to Brenda Murray, a former mayor of East Gippsland Shire and prominent Orbost resident.This magazine is a useful reference tool.Two copies of the magazine, Croajingolong 1977. 2225.1 has a torquoise cover and 2225.2 has a mid blue cover. Both have a large graphic design on the front cover of CROAJINGOLONG 1977 created in stone with 5 workers chizeling and polishing the structure. There are heavy clouds above.
