A copy of the minutes of a committee meeting that discussed The Presidents Fund and the Over 70 meetings. It mentions that the annual gatherings for member over 70 years of age, originally meant it was primarily for those who fought in World War 1. Now WWII members were nearing that age and criteria might need to be reassessed. The Over 70 meeting was a major contributor of funds for the Presidents Fund. Perhaps by 1986 the annual amount donated by the Berry Trust had ended (for many years $1000 a year was received from the fund set up by Legatee Walter Berry). The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation of £50 from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Correspondence with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. The folder was marked with H40 which is part of an early archive project from the late 1960s and early 1970s.A record that there was an Advisory, Tradition and History Committee at Legacy. In the 1950s with the introduction two-way HF and later VHF very high frequency radio sets. Melton Rural Fire Brigade was part of the Bacchus Marsh Group. Radio sets where located in the Melton Fire Truck, and in the house of the Barrie family at Ferris Road. This was an ideal location to observe a 360 degree view in all directions when smoke appeared on the horizon. An antenna was erected beside the house. The set OX 7 was located in the kitchen and monitored 24 hours by the family. When an electrical fire occurred at the junction of the electricity to the house there was time to radio the fire station and summons the men working in the paddocks, thus saving the house from possible destruction. With the introduction of UHF – ultra high frequency Vinten Radios the signal was clearer and static and interference lessened and radio traffic became easier to read, and reduced noise levels in the household. VL3 LY Radio Base became the Group Headquarters was established in 1967. By 1970 the Brigades were: Melton, Rockbank, Sydenham, Toolern Vale, Diggers Rest, Truganina, and Werribee. In 1974 when the family moved to First Avenue, another antenna and a small building were erected adjacent to the residence and used to house the equipment, maps. Radio traffic consisted of regular schedule times and communication with adjoining groups of brigades such as Bacchus Marsh, Mt Macedon and Little River Groups. Many of the brigade and group base radios were situated in private residences and operated primarily by fire fighters wives who held the position of Communications Officer, either registered as a brigade member or informally. Edna was never registered as an operational brigade member but operated informally as an assistant to her husband Bon. She was however a member of the Melton Fire Brigade Ladies Auxiliary from its inception in 1968, a non-operational position. Edna kept up to date with radio procedure following the 1967 handbook; preparing maps, plotting compass points and taking notes on weather forecasts from the SA Border and Western District. Daily notes were taken in anticipation of fire warnings. These log books and daily radio traffic were incidental to the regular radio schedules. Emergency turnouts noted, burning off times and predicted location of smoke. In the summer fire season all TBF (total fire ban days were recorded.) In times of emergency the Barrie family assisted Bon the base radio operator to plot the position and location of fire trucks and to help clarify garbled radio traffic, keep notes and make telephone calls. This Bible belonged to Thomas Wong Ch(e)ong who was the catechist at the Warrnambool Chinese Church in Ryot Street, Warrnambool. In 1892 Thomas Wong Cheong was appointed by the Foreign Missions Committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria as the catechist to the Chinese community in Warrnambool and district. The Chinese Church in Ryot Street was established in the early 1890s and continued until the late 1920s when the numbers of the local Chinese community had declined. Thomas Wong Cheong and his wife worked tirelessly in the Warrnambool district until his death in 1923. No information has been found on James Yee Keet. This is a book of high significance because it belonged to Thomas Wong Cheong who holds an important place in Warrnambool’s history because of his work with the Warrnambool Chinese community over a period of 30 years. This is a leather-covered book with four gold Chinese characters on the spine and the back cover (the front cover for Chinese readers). The leather on the cover extends over the pages and folds inwards to almost enclose the pages. The pages are gilt-edged. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink. The book contains a fold-out map of the Mediterranean Sea area and all the text is in printed Chinese characters. The cover is somewhat scuffed and there is some silverfish damage on the inside cover. ‘Presented to Christian friend Mr Thos. This collection of papers have come from the offices of William Ardlie a local solicitor. He was born in Moonee Ponds in 1843 and was admitted as an attorney and solicitor of the supreme Court in 1865. From 1867 to 1878 he was in partnership with George Barber and then continued to practise until his late eighties which made him the oldest practising lawyer in Australia. He was involved in local councils and organisations such as the Hospital and Anglican Church.He was associated with several large homes in Warrnambool including Wyton presently the home of Emmanual College Warrnambool. He died in 1933.His son E L Ardlie also practised as a solicitor from the same offices from 1893. A number of the invoices included relate to the Estate of James drought who was a local policeman and owner of a number of properties and operated in various trades such as George Ramsay manufacturer of stoves and chimneys, J Rogers plumber & gas fitter and Christian & Dodds who were carpenters and joiners. There are a number of documents which relate to the Chinese, many of whom operated market gardens along the Merri River. They were a familiar part of Warrnambool from around 1872 until around 1940. The names mentioned in these documents include Ah Foo,Charles Quing Bow, Andrew Quing Bow Ah Bing Ah Jing Ah Moon and Ah Seong. They were reknown for their supply of fresh vegetables to the people of the town. They leased land from John Moore. These documents are a cross section of the types of documents which were used and are still used in the operation of businesses. They provide a social snapshot of people and the business which they conducted with their solicitors in this case William and E L Ardlie who were a long standing legal firm in the district.
