Front cover has a part sketch of the Beehive Building, home of the Bendigo Stock Exchange, in Sandhurst (now Bendigo). Above and below the sketch is a part coloured picture of a fireman at a fire. An article mentions that on 25 August 1871, 18 year old Edward Hope Kirkby, watched the burning of the Beehive Building, home of the Bendigo Stock Exchange, this may have been his motivation to become one of the most prolific inventors of communication apparatus and fire protection equipment in Australia. This Sandhurst gold mine was registered in 1864 although its head office was in Melbourne. The first manager was Edwin Chaplin. It had an initial nominal capital of 11,200 pounds raised through 224 shares of 50 pounds each. It was liquidated and delisted on the stock exchange in 1951.Two typewritten letters, one dated 8th May 1925 and the other 22nd June 1925. Both letters are addressed to Mr. M. Kelly, Beehive chambers, Bendigo. The first one advising that enclosed is a statutory declaration in connection with the scrip certificates for 200 shares that have been lost. The second one advising of two cheques for 25 pounds enclosed as payment of dividends. Robert Samuel Valentine Cocking (1882 - 14/5/1945) Born in Bendigo, Val Cocking began hi retail career at Myer Bendigo before opening his own draper shop c. 1912 in the lower block Pall Mall. In 1914 he moved his stock into temporary premises while he renovated his new shop, which combined the former Post Office Hotel and adjacent grocery and stationary shops. The new emporium opened in Aug 1918 selling drapery and soft goods. Mr Cocking was a champion rifle shooter; President of the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce; President of the Sandhurst Football Club for 18 years and President of the Bendigo Cricket Club. Bennetts Hardware shop was in Hargeaves St near the entrance to Allan's Walk in the 1950's. Beehive buildings. The Original Beehive store dates from the early tent days of the gold rush. A two story building was erected in 1864, which included mining exchange offices on the upper floor. The building burnt down in 1871. The current building, designed by Charles Webb, was built in 1872, Allens Walk shopping arcade on the ground floor runs between Pall Mall and Hargreaves St. with offices on the first and second floors. Robert Oswald Henderson was the managing proprietor of the Beehive Stores. Born on the 27th of March 1875, he was the second son of Thomas Hope and Marion Henderson. Thomas Hope Henderson was formerly part owner of the Beehive store, in the firm of Henderson and Goodisson. After the death of his father in 1899, Robert Oswald Henderson assisted Mr. J. R. Goodisson in the management of the Beehive. The Stores passed into the ownership of the Henderson family after the retirement of Mr Goodisson and Robert Oswald Henderson was appointed managing proprietor.
