This cash book is one of the earliest administrative books that exist in the Victorian Bands' League historical collection. The earlier years contain records of which bands paid affiliation to the League, and in later years there is detail on what the League spent money on, and how much they received in Government grants. Mentioned throughout the cash book are the names of prominent bandsmen and brass bands. Interestingly in the later pages of the records, for some reason a new page numbering system was used before it reverted back to single pages. Series of documents recording the third progress payment to W.B. Russell for writing 'There Goes a Man', his signed receipt, outline of progress and the way in which the payments wasere used. He notes four main fields of activity - sifting and arranging Savige's own records, research and interviews in Canberra and Sydney, background reading (newspapers etc.), and the writing of the first two chapters. Most of the first progress payment was directed to reimbursement of salary lost whilst working full time on the book, as well as travel and accommodation expenses.Part of the story of how the book 'There goes a Man' came to be created.Typed documents, black on white. A newspaper clipping from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. The newspaper clipping from 13 March 1963, shows a photo of Heather Thompson. The article mentions that Heather Thompson of Ballarat received a gold medal for coming top of her year at Pharmacy College and also turned 21. She was a junior legatee that stayed at Stanhope while she studied at Pharmacy College. In the article she mentions that she 'believes she owes some of her success to Legacy, which took care of her additional expenses while she was attending the Pharmacy College.' Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in one photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01834. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. A record of a Stanhope girl being successful in her studies and the matron keeping a clipping from the newspaper. A large green cloth paper wavy patterned covered Norman Bros., Leger Book with burgundy tape on the spine. This blank book was used by the Silvan Progress Association in 1914 as written on the front cover in copperplate writing. Inside the book starts at page 64 so the pages 1 - 63 may well have been used in 1914 and they have been torn out. There is an entry on Page 173, the last page, for Expenses for 1915 & 1916 for the Silvan Progress Assoc.The Leger was used as a Statement of Accounts Processed Strawberries Apl - June 1939 and for other statements too.
